BREAKING: Sony finally unveils David Fincher’s PANIC ROOM (2002) for 4K Ultra HD Steelbook release in February!
Heads up, Bits! We’ve got some very great and long-awaited catalog 4K release news for you this morning.
But first, we also have a few more new disc reviews to share with you...
I’ve just posted my thoughts on Ahsoka: The Complete First Season in 4K Ultra HD Steelbook format from Lucasfilm, which (like all of the latest wave of Disney+ titles, now includes Dolby Vision HDR). And yesterday, I reviewed Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar (2014) in a new 10th Anniversary Limited Edition 4K box set release from Paramount.
Sam has shared his take on Oliver Stone’s Born on the Fourth of July (1989) in a new Shout Select Collector’s Edition 4K Ultra HD release from Shout! Factory.
Dennis has reviewed James Ivory’s Roseland (1977) on Blu-ray from the Cohen Film Collection via Kino Lorber.
And yesterday, Tim posted his look at Arrow’s When Titans Ruled the Earth box set, which includes Louis Letterier’s Clash of the Titans (2010) and Jonathan Liebesman’s Wrath of the Titans (2012) in 4K UHD, as well as Kino Lorber Studio Classics’ Monk: Season Four on Blu-ray.
Watching for more reviews each day the rest of the week. And you Marvel fans should know that yes, we are working on a Loki: Season Two 4K review as well. So be sure to stay tuned for that. [Read on here...]

The Marvels, Shout! Studios sets Kathryn Bigelow’s K-19 & more for 4K, plus Trolls Band Together, new KLSC titles, Dragons Down & more
Afternoon, folks! We’re stating the new week here at The Bits with a couple of new disc reviews, including...
Tim’s take on Daniel Attias’ Silver Bullet: Collector’s Edition in 4K Ultra HD, as well as his thoughts on our old friend John Harrison’s Tales from the Darkside: The Movie – Collector’s Edition in 4K Ultra HD, both of them from Scream Factory.
Speaking of Scream, Shout Studios has also begun revealing some of their March catalog titles, which thus far are set to include Jonathan Kaplan’s Over the Edge (1979) on Blu-ray on 3/5, Mick Garris’ The Shining miniseries (1997) on Blu-ray on 3/12, Simon Wincer’s Quigley Down Under (1990) in 4K as a Shout! Select title also on 3/12, and a trio of additional 4K titles on 3/19... Lars Klevberg’s Child’s Play (2019), Kimberly Peirce’s Carrie (2013), and Kathryn Bigelow’s K-19: The Widowmaker (2002).
Meanwhile, the big news today is that Marvel and Disney have officially announced the Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD release of Nia DaCosta’s The Marvels (2023) for release on 2/13, with the Digital release expected on 1/16. Extras will include audio commentary with DaCosta and VFX supervisor Tara DeMarco, 2 featurettes (Entangled and The Production Diaries), 4 deleted scenes, and a gag reel. There will also be a 4K Steelbook edition that’s exclusive to Walmart. Audio on the 4K (a UHD-66 disc) will be Dolby Atmos, with DTS-HD Master Audio on the Blu-ray. You can see the cover artwork at left and also below.
Also, Universal and DreamWorks Animation have listed the CG-animated Trolls Band Together (2023) for Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K UHD release on 7/1 on Amazon, though that’s probably a placeholder date. Whatever the final street date ends up being, look for a Trolls 3-Movie Collection on Blu-ray and DVD that same day. [Read on here...]

My Fair Lady & Super 8 4K due 5/25 from Paramount, plus Shout!/Scream’s May slate on Amazon & Wonder Woman 84 on Blu-ray 3D
There’s not a lot of release news to report today, given the President’s Day holiday here in the States, so we’re spending our time working on those new disc reviews.
But we do have a couple quick items to report for you...
First, Paramount is now expected to release both George Cukor’s My Fair Lady (1964) and J.J. Abrams’ Super 8 (2011) on 4K Ultra HD on 5/25. We have cover artwork for My Fair Lady which you can see at left. Meanwhile, both titles have just been added to Amazon.com. They aren’t yet available for pre-order, but we expect that to change shortly. For now, you can find My Fair Lady linked here and Super 8 here. We expect the official announcement to happen in the next couple of days, so be sure to stay tuned. [Read on here...]
King Kong (1976), Explorers, City Slickers II & more from Shout!/Scream in May, plus more new releases & catalog titles on Blu-ray
We’re starting today with a pair of new Blu-ray Disc reviews here at The Bits, including...
My own look at Ric Roman Waugh’s Greenland on Blu-ray, a great new disaster epic starring Gerard Butler from Universal and STX Films which should really be released on physical 4K Ultra HD.
Now then... the big news today is that Shout! Factory and Scream have announced a great slate of catalog Blu-ray titles for release in May, including a King Kong (1976): Collector’s Edition, The Final Stand (2020), The Legend of Hei (with GKids), and All About the Benjamins: Shout Select on 5/11, Wildcats: Shout Select, The Nest, He Knows You’re Alone, and Eyes of a Stranger on 5/18, and The Hand, Explorers: Collector’s Edition – Shout Select, and City Slickers II: The Legend of Curley’s Gold: Shout Select on 5/25. Shout! licenses Studio Canal’s The Deer Hunter for 4K Ultra HD, plus Color Out of Space & Richard Jewell
So the big news this morning is that Shout! Factory has dropped an out-of-left-field 4K Ultra HD announcement: They’re gotten the US release rights to Michael Cimino’s 1978 Best Picture winner The Deer Hunter. As some of you will know, this was a Studio Canal release last year in the UK on 4K Ultra HD, but there was no U.S. distributor.
Shout! will be releasing it on 5/26 as a Shout Select 4K/Blu-ray Collector’s Edition. SRP is $34.93, but you can pre-order it direct from the Shout website for just $28.43 with an exclusive poster. There will apparently be some new extras, which will be announced at a later date. We have no details yet on HDR or audio specs, but the Studio Canal package included Dolby Vision and HDR10, with 2.0 and 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. [Read on here...]
First Man official, plus Halloween (2018), Perfect Blue, Arrow’s Django delay, Revenge of the Creature 3D update & more
We start today with a pair of new Blu-ray reviews, including Tim’s take on John Waters’ Female Trouble from the Criterion Collection, and also Dennis’ look at The Nun from Warner. More reviews are on the way this week and next, including (next week) several new 4K reviews from myself. Among them will be M:I – Fallout and The Lion King. My wife and I have family visiting here at the moment though, so it’s been tough to break away to do the reviews with the justice they deserve.
The BIG announcement news today is that Universal has officially set Damien Chazelle’s First Man for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 1/22, with the Digital release expected on 1/5. Here’s the great news... while the film is presented in its original 2.40:1 theatrical aspect ratio, the final scenes will be presented in full 1.78:1 to preserve the IMAX aspect as seen in theaters. Audio is English Dolby Atmos and the 4K image will include both HDR10 and Dolby Vision.
Extras on the Blu-ray versions will include feature commentary (with director Damien Chazelle, screenwriter Josh Singer, and editor Tom Cross), deleted scenes, and 8 featurettes (including Shooting for the Moon, Preparing to Launch, Giant Leap in One Small Step, Mission Gone Wrong, Putting You in the Seat, Recreating the Moon Landing, Shooting at NASA, and Astronaut Training). This is certainly the 4K Ultra HD I’m most looking forward to right now here at The Bits. It should be terrific. [Read on here...]
Bud on Burt, plus New on Blu-ray
[What follows is a feature I wrote for The Daily Oklahoman about one of the greatest movie stars and human beings ever… Burt Reynolds]
Maybe it was the mustache. Or the unscripted quips. Or the genteel Southern manner.
Or just maybe it was that laugh, a cackle delivered by one comfortable in his own skin – inviting his audience gut bust with him, as though they were all in a private joke.
That’s our Burt. And he’s, unbelievably, gone.
Fame, according to Jeanine Bissinger, is “often conferred or withheld just as is love, for reasons and on grounds other than merits.” Burt Reynolds earned his fame with raw boned talent and insight into the business of filmed diversion. [Read on here...]
The Big Lebowski & Jurassic World 5-Film set coming to 4K, plus new Kino & Shout/Scream titles
All right, let’s have a quick update with more breaking release news…
Many months after we first told you it was coming, Universal is finally bringing The Big Lebowski to 4K Ultra HD on 10/16, with both regular and limited editions available (the latter can be seen below, packed with swag). We’re awaiting the official announcement, but both are now listed for pre-order on Amazon.com (click here and here to see them).
Also, the studio is releasing a Jurassic World: 5-Film Collection on 4K Ultra HD on 9/18, day and date with the home video release of Jurassic Park: Fallen Kingdom on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K. So those of you who waited to pick up all the earlier films in 4K hoping for a 5-film box, now’s your chance. You can see the cover art art right and you can pre-order it here.
Note that we’ve updated the 4K Ultra HD Release List here at The Bits with this information and pre-order links for a number of additional upcoming 4K titles. [Read on here...]

On Someone with Foresight & Recent Releases
Sometimes it’s wonderful to find someone who hails from the same planet as you. I go to film festivals and am always pleased to find intelligent, well dressed and conversant people on subjects close to my heart. These folks, somewhat like yours truly, are professionals, go to work every day, raise families and live contemplative and productive lives. And, well, like a fool such as I, love, as Pauline Kael once said, “when the lights go down.”
I’ve been extremely lucky – I’ve had mentors and friends who have done their dead level best to educate me in the ways of the world while also sharing their deep and abiding love for everything silver and screen. [Read on here...]

Paramount sets Downsizing for 3/20, plus Deep Blue Sea 2, Shout!’s Wild at Heart & more
The big news today is that Paramount has just set Alexander Payne’s Downsizing for Blu-ray, DVD, Digital, and 4K Ultra HD release on 3/20. Extras will include 6 behind-the-scenes featurettes (including Working with Alexander, The Cast, A Visual Journey, A Matter of Perspective, That Smile, and A Global Concern). Audio will be DTS-HD MA.
In addition, it looks like Paramount is releasing Cheech & Chong’s Still Smoking on Blu-ray on 4/10, in addition to the Up in Smoke: 40th Anniversary Edition we mentioned on Wednesday.
Now then... if you haven’t already purchased any of Universal’s Despicable Me titles in 4K Ultra HD, the studio is releasing an Illumination Presents: 3-Movie Collection of all three of them on 3/13 for $79.98. [Read on here…]
