Almost there… our penultimate Oktoberfest review, a new Cheap Seats & more!
Okay... today’s Bits post is a very quick one, as we’re gearing up for tomorrow’s big Halloween finale for The Hell Plaza Oktoberfest Se7en. BUT...
The mad Dr. Jahnke’s Oktoberfest review for today is a gem – a preview of an upcoming DVD release from our very dear friend Bob Burns. It’s Bob Burns’ Hollywood Halloween! The 2-disc set looks back at all the great Halloween haunted houses that Bob and Kathy have held over the years at their home in Burbank! It includes a documentary by Lindsey Keith Jackson, footage of the actual haunted house experiences, interviews with the likes of John Landis, menus produced by our friend Van Ling, cover art by Vincent Di Fate and much more! The DVD is not quite ready for wide release yet, and distribution is still TBA. BUT... [Read on here...]

This was all we needed to hear: The DUKE was coming to Oklahoma City.
It was the year of our Lord, 1972 and The National Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Center in Oklahoma City (now called the National Cowboy Museum and Western Heritage Center) hosted every year a grand event called the Western Heritage Awards, where they gave a trophy called “The Wrangler” to outstanding theatrical and television Westerns and the winner this particular year was a film called “The Cowboys,” starring, well, you know who. Right Stuff review, Death Wish: 40th, Never Sleep Again, You’re Next, Himalaya & cool Star Wars news!
We’re closing out our last full week of the Hell Plaza Oktoberfest with Dr. Jahnke’s review of John Carpenter’s Body Bags: Collector’s Edition from Scream Factory. Just four more reviews to go, but Jahnke’s saving a couple real gems for last.
Also today, we’ve posted our in-depth review of a true classic and a very long awaited Blu-ray release: Warner’s The Right Stuff: 30th Anniversary Edition. Not only is this a great film, but it’s a bit of smart satire that’s also deeply admiring of those the men – test pilots and astronauts alike – who exemplify the film’s title. And the Blu-ray looks and sounds pretty terrific, so don’t miss it. [Read on here...]

Sherlock: Season 3, All Is Bright, Nightmare column, Conjuring & Life Is Sweet reviews & more!
We’ve got some great news today for you fans of the BBC’s Sherlock: PBS has just announced that Season Three will officially premiere here in the States on 1/19/14 on Masterpiece, following the 9 PM broadcast of Downton Abbey. This is bar none my favorite show on television right now, so I’m very excited by this. As before, the season will contain three new 90-minute episodes: The Empty Hearse (1/19), The Sign of Three (debuts on 1/26) and His Last Vow (2/2 – Superbowl Sunday as it happens), eached based on a classic Sir Arthur Conan Doyle story. Blu-ray and DVD versions (SRP $39.98 and $29.98) are NOW available for pre-order on Amazon.com (street date is TBA, but our guess with be early Feb 2014)! You’ll find the temp cover art below. And of course, the BBC has confirmed that Season Four is already in the works. Great news all around!
Now then, today’s Hell Plaza Oktoberfest review from Dr. Jahnke is none other than James Wan’s recent The Conjuring on Blu-ray from Universal. And turns out it’s pretty great. Don’t miss it. [Read on here...]
