Happy Holidays, Bits readers!
It’s a slow week in the home entertainment industry, what with Christmas fast approaching, Hanukkah having just concluded and other holidays well underway—hey, folks even gathered at Stonehenge in the UK to celebrate yesterday’s Winter Solstice, aka the shortest day of the year. So it’s all sun and games from here on out, and New Year’s is right around the corner!
We’ve got a couple of recent disc reviews to share with you today, though most of The Bits review team is throttling down a bit just to relax and enjoy some well earned holiday time family friends. Nevertheless, today we have...
Stephen’s reviews of Dezső Ákos Hamza’s Sirius (1942) on Blu-ray from Deaf Crocodile Films, as well as Richard Stanley’s Dust Devil (1992) in 4K Ultra HD from our friends at Umbrella Entertainment.
And Dennis’ take on Paul Auster’s Lulu on the Bridge (1998) on Blu-ray from Imprint Films.
We may have another review of two this week, but if not we’ll definitely have more for you next week after Christmas.
In the meantime, we do have some good new and recent disc announcements to cover here this afternoon...

Now then… my apologies for not sharing a My Two Cents post here on the site yesterday. I’d fully intended to have one up, and suddenly a bunch of calls, emails, and messages came in from sources and I found myself going down a rabbit hole of chasing down some really interesting bits of industry news and title release rumors. You’ll see the result of that effort here over the next couple of weeks.
In terms of today’s news items, here’s the big one: Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has just finally officially announced the 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray + Digital release of the animated The Emperor’s New Groove (2000) on 12/9, just as we expected and have been reporting for a few months now. Criterion’s September slate includes High and Low, This Is Spinal Tap & Flow in 4K, plus Lois & Clark on Blu-ray & more!
We’re starting the week here at The Bits with more new disc reviews and some great announcement news as well!
But first, I just wanted to let you all know that we’ve stabilized the website to address some software and loading issues that we’ve been experiencing recently. We’re not 100% back to normal, but the site should at least be loading faster now than it was before. We’ll be doing some additional upgrades in the week ahead, so more on that topic soon.
In the meantime, we’ve shared a bunch of great new disc reviews here on the site today and over the weekend. Among them are…
My review (with longtime Bits contributor Adam Jahnke) of William Friedkin’s Sorcerer (1977) in 4K Ultra HD from the Criterion Collection! The disc streets on 6/24, and the A/V quality is superb.
I’ve also reviewed the new UFO: The Complete SHADO Files Blu-ray box set from our friends at Imprint Television, which contains the best HD quality of any Blu-ray release of Gerry Anderson’s UFO (1970-71) to date, along with the most complete collection of special features.
Also new today is Dennis’ look at Jaume Collet-Serra’s The Woman in the Yard (2025) on Blu-ray from Blumhouse and Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.
And Stephen has taken an in-depth look at Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett’s Abigail (2024) in 4K Ultra HD from Universal via Scream Factory.
More new disc reviews are definitely on the way all this week, so be sure to watch out for them! [Read on here...]

We’ve got some great 4K catalog release news for you here today, but first we have more new disc reviews...
First up, I’ve reviewed Ridley Scott’s Kingdom of Heaven: Director’s Cut (2005) in 4K Ultra HD from 20th Century Studios via Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. It’s a fantastic release that streets on Tuesday. But we know it’s been hard to pre-order, so we’re waiting to hear back from Sony on the demand issue and we’ll let you know when we do. In the meantime, my review is lengthy and in-depth, so enjoy.
Also, Stephen has reviewed David Cronenberg’s The Brood (1979) in 4K Ultra HD from Second Sight Films.
Tim has shared his thoughts on Gordon Flemying’s Dr. Who and the Daleks (1965) in Blu-ray from Severin Films.
And finally, Dennis has offered his take on Roger Kumble’s Just Friends (2005) on Blu-ray from the Warner Archive Collection.

Criterion’s August has De Sica’s Shoeshine & art house titles, plus Excalibur is coming, Bride of Re-Animator, StudioCanal’s Ran: 40th, Bewitched & more!
Our friends at the Criterion Collection have just closed out the week by announcing their August slate of Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD titles, and it’s interesting indeed. There are few, what one might call, major titles this month, but there are some interesting art house gems. The slate includes...
Kon Ichikawa’s Fires on the Plain (1959) (Spine #378 – 4K + Blu-ray and Blu-ray) and The Burmese Harp (1956) (Spine #379 – 4K + Blu-ray and Blu-ray) on 8/5, Youssef Chahine’s Cairo Station (Spine #1273 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 8/12, A Confucian Confusion / Mahjong: Two Films by Edward Yang (1994-96) (Spine #1275 – Blu-ray) and Vittorio De Sica’s Shoeshine (1946) (Spine #1272 – 4K + Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD) on 8/19, and finally Maura Delpero’s Vermiglio (2024) (Janus Contemporaries – Blu-ray and DVD), Alice Wu’s Saving Face (2004) (Spine #1276 – Blu-ray), and Zeinabu irene Davis’s Compensation (1999) (Spine #1274 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 8/26.
Curiously, there aren’t a lot of 4K titles in this batch, but I strongly suspect it’s because they have many more in the works. In any case, you can read more about these titles on Criterion’s website here. And don’t forget that they’re running their Spring Sale until 5/26, offering 30% of all discs. [Read on here...]

It’s Classic TV-a-Rama with I Love Lucy, I Dream of Jeannie & Bewitched on Blu-ray, plus new disc reviews, additional title announcements & more!
All right, we’ve got three new disc reviews for you to finish out the week, plus some more great new title announcements. The reviews first...
Stephen has taken a look at David Twohy’s The Chronicles of Riddick (2004) in 4K Ultra HD, as released by our friends at Arrow Video.
And Stuart has turned in his thoughts on Francis Ford Coppola’s You’re a Big Boy Now (1996) on Blu-ray, also from the Warner Archive Collection. And how fitting it is that we’re reviewing Coppola’s first feature film, even as what may be his last—Megalopolis (2024)—is now in theaters.
As always, more reviews are on the way, so be sure to watch for them.
Now then... the big news today is all on the classic TV front: First, Paramount Home Entertainment and CBS have officially set I Love Lucy: The Complete Series for release on Blu-ray for the first time ever! Expected on 11/5, the 33-disc set will include all 180 episodes of I Love Lucy (1951-57), plus all episodes of The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour (1957-60) remastered with long-missing footage restored, plus the newly-colorized episode Lucy and the Loving Cup. In addition, the series’ opening and closing credits have been restored along with many original cast commercials. Three long-lost “flashback” scenes have been remastered. And a portion of the 1959 CBS Fall Preview Special has been included. You’ll also get the original I Love Lucy pilot episode (remastered from original 35mm kinescope), I Love Lucy: The Movie, audio commentaries on select episodes, Lucy on the Radio broadcasts, flubs, slideshows, cast bios, photo galleries, and production notes. You can see the cover artwork at left and also below. [Read on here...]
