Our new disc review for today is none other than Stephen’s look at Wolfgang Petersen’s The NeverEnding Story (1984) in a terrific new 4K Ultra HD Limited Edition box set from our friends at Via Vision’s Imprint Films label. The 5-disc set has been released to honor the film’s 40th anniversary and includes multiple cuts of the film plus the 2024 Life After The NeverEnding Story documentary. And it comes in a package that replicates the book as seen in the film. It’s pretty special, so do give Stephen’s thoughts a look here.

Now then... the big news today is that Severn Films has just announced the Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD release of two more classic Russ Meyer films, including Motorpsycho (1965) and Up! (1976). Pre-orders start today, with the street date set for 4/29. Each has been scanned from the original camera negatives. Look for HDR10 on the 4K discs with mono audio, plus new and archival special features that include audio commentaries and more.

Shout! Factory has begun announcing its April slate, which will include Chris McKay’s Renfield (2023) in 4K Ultra HD, Paul Briganti’s Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain (2023) on Blu-ray, and Mamoru Hosoda’s Summer Wars (2000) on both Blu-ray and 4K Steelbook (the latter for GKids) on 4/1, followed by Carol Frank’s Sorority House Massacre (1986) on 4K + BD on 4/8, Craig Zobel’s The Hunt (2020) on 4K on 4/22, and Peter Hyams’ Timecop (1994) on 4K + Blu-ray on 4/29. The big release news today, of course, is that Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment has announced the Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD release of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie on 10/17. The Digital version is already available. Now the highest-grossing film in Warner Bros’ 100-year history (per the studio’s own press release), the 4K will include HDR10 high dynamic range, along with English Dolby Atmos audio (the Blu-ray will include Atmos as well). Both discs will also offer six behind-the-scenes featurettes (including Welcome to Barbie Land, Becoming Barbie, Playing Dress-Up, Musical Make-Believe, All-Star Barbie Party, and It’s a Weird World). You can see the cover artwork at left and also below.

Warner Bros. has also officially set The Nun II for Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD release on 11/14, with the Digital version set to become available for purchase today (10/3). Extras will include two featurettes (Demons in Paradise and Handcrafter Nightmares). Audio on both the Blu-ray SKUs will be Dolby Atmos.

And in international release news, our friends at Turbine Medien GmbH in Germany have just set Chris McKay’s Renfield for release on 4K Ultra HD Steelbook in December. [Read on here...]

We have a few major title announcements to report today...

First up, the big one: Disney and Marvel have officially set James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3 for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 8/1, with the Digital release expected on 7/7. You can expect Dolby Atmos audio and HDR10 high dynamic range on the 4K SKU. The Blu-ray Disc will include 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. But here’s the most interesting thing: For the first time, a Disney/Marvel title has included a variable aspect ratio that switches from 2.35 to 1.85! [Editor’s Note: Per studio reps, this replicates not the IMAX presentation but rather the wide-release presentation of the film as seen in some regular, non-IMAX theaters. Just FYI.]

Extras on all SKUs will include 2 featurettes (The Imperfect, Perfect Family and Creating Rocket Raccoon), a gag reel, 8 deleted scenes (A Bit Much, A Lending Hand, Drax’s Analogies and Metaphors, The Perfect Society, The Search for 89P13, Annoyed Peter, A Burning Escape, and Knowhere After the Battle), and audio commentary with James Gunn. You can see the cover artwork at left and also below. [Read on here...]
