We’ve got a whole bunch of release news for you today.

First though, our own Russell Hammond has updated the Release Dates & Artwork section with all the latest Blu-ray and DVD cover artwork, with Amazon.com pre-order links. Remember that whenever you order or pre-order anything from Amazon after clicking through our links, you’re helping to support our work here at The Bits and we really do appreciate it.

Now then… first up today, it looks as if the street date for Warner’s as-yet-unannounced The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies – Extended Edition is going to be 11/10 or 11/17. The U.K. release is already listed on Amazon.co.uk with a date of 11/16, so you can bet the U.S. release will confirm fairly closely to this. We expect an official announcement soon, possibly around San Diego Comic-Con which is just two weeks away. [Read on here…]

First up today, Amazon.com is now taking pre-orders for Universal’s Jurassic World, street date TBA. Click here for that.

The big news is that Criterion has revealed their delightful slate of September titles, which is set to include Krzysztof Kieślowski’s Blind Chance (Cat #772 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 9/15, Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom (Cat #776 – Blu-ray and DVD), and Bruce Beresford’s Breaker Morant (Cat #773 – Blu-ray and DVD) and Mister Johnson (Cat #774 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 9/22, and Leonard Kastle’s The Honeymoon Killers (Cat #200 – Blu-ray and DVD) and James Ivory’s A Room with a View (Cat #775 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 9/29. Blind Chance? Breaker Morant? Moonrise Kingdom? That just pleases me right down to the ground. By the way, fingers crossed we’ll get to see Kieślowski’s The Decalogue given Blu-ray treatment by Criterion one day. Anyway, you can find some of the cover artwork below.  [Read on here…]

We’re starting the day with sad news I’m afraid. The legendary British actors Sir Christopher Lee and Ron Moody have both passed away today.

Lee made his name early, playing Count Dracula and other characters for Hammer Films. His Wikipedia page lists appearances in some 206 films, not to mention numerous TV, stage, and even video game roles. Over the years, he’s played Death, both Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes, Frankenstein’s Creature, Fu Manchu, Lord Summerisle, and King Haggard. Bond fans will surely remember him as the villain Francisco Scaramanga from The Man with the Golden Gun. Younger Star Wars prequel fans were likely introduced to him as Count Dooku. Of course, his last great role was the wizard Saruman the White in The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings films. But Lee lived an adventurous life beyond stage and screen as well. He apparently hunted Nazis during world war II as a member of Churchill’s so-called “Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.” He even recorded a symphonic metal concept album called Charlemagne: By the Sword and the Cross. Now that’s a helluva life. You can read more here via The Telegraph and The New York Times.  Lee was 93.  [Read on here…]
