Well… tonight’s the big night for your Tolkien fans.  The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug opens tonight at Midnight at theaters around the world, so I’m guessing there will be at least a few people standing in lines over the coming hours.

In announcement news today, Universal will release Closed Circuit on Blu-ray Combo and DVD on 1/7.

Kino Lorber has set Andrei Tarkovsky’s Nostalghia for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 1/21.

Music Box Films has The Returned: The Complete First Season coming on Blu-ray and DVD on 1/21 as well.  [Read on here…]

20th Century Fox has Take Me Home Tonight set for BD release on 1/14.

Lionsgate has set the NBC drama Crossing Lines: Season One for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 1/21 (SRP $29.97 and $29.98).  Extras will include the Behind the Lines featurette.

Lionsgate also has The Hunger Games: Catching Fire available for pre-order on Amazon – check out the cover art and pre-order link below.  Not street date is listed, but Amazon has it for $22.99.

Here’s a puzzle: A company called FCE has set The Old Dark House Collection for release on “4801 Blu-ray” including 25 classic films on a single BD disc for $24.99.  Lame.  All appear to be public domain, so you can be sure even the SD quality will be inferior.  I’m not even going to bother listing them, but you can see the titles here on Amazon.

And a company called Joseph James Pictures has set The Bench for release on Blu-ray on 1/14.

Meanwhile, NPD Group says that Blu-ray player sales were up 3% this Black Friday.  More here at Home Media.

And finally, for you soundtrack fans, Varese Sarabande Records is kicking off next year’s celebration of the 25th anniversary of James Cameron’s The Abyss by releasing Alan Silvestri’s The Abyss: The Deluxe Edition 2-CD soundtrack in a limited edition of just 3000 copies.  It’s available at this link only for $24.98.  Pretty awesome – don’t miss it.  We expect that the Blu-ray will finally appear next year from Fox as well (along with True Lies).

We’ll leave you with more cover art today.  Here’s Universal’s Closed Circuit and About Time (due 2/4), Kino’s Nostalghia, Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, MGM’s Carrie remake (1/14) and Drafthouse Films’ The Act of Killing (1/7)…

Closed Circuit (Blu-ray Disc)    About Time (Blu-ray Disc)    Nostalghia (Blu-ray Disc)

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (Blu-ray Disc)    Carrie (2013 Blu-ray Disc)    The Act of Killing (Blu-ray Disc)

Stay tuned...
