We’ve got BIG 4K news to cover here at The Bits this afternoon, so let’s get right into it…

First up, reviews! Today we have for you…

Stephen’s look at Delmar Daves’ 3:10 to Yuma (1957) in 4K from Criterion, Hal Ashby’s Being There (1979) on Blu-ray as recently reissued by Warner Bros., and Marcell Jankovics’ Song of the Miraculous Hind (2002) on Blu-ray from our friends at Deaf Crocodile Films. (And we have more Deaf Croc reviews forthcoming!)

Tim’s thoughts on Don Coscarelli’s The Beastmaster (1982) in 4K Ultra HD, both the new release from Imprint Films and also the Scream Factory edition from November of last year.

And Tim has also reviewed the Warner Archive’s new Looney Tunes: Collector’s Vault – Volume 2 (1934-63) on Blu-ray, Guy Magar’s Retribution (1987) in 4K from Severin Films, and he’s tag-teamed with Dennis for a review of Kenneth Branagh’s Dead Again (1991) in 4K Ultra HD from Kino Lorber Studio Classic.

Also here at The Bits today, our own Russell Hammond has just shared the latest update of our Release Dates & Artwork section, featuring all the latest Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD cover art and Amazon pre-order links. Don’t forget, The Bits is an Amazon Affiliate, so literally anything you order after clicking to them from of our links (like this one) goes to help support our work here at the site and we appreciate it!

Now then… the big release news here today is something that those of you who are subscribers to our Patreon site already knew was coming: Disney has just officially announced the classic animated Alice in Wonderland (1951) for 4K Ultra HD release on 5/5! [Read on here...]

The new 4K restoration will debut at the TCM Classic Film Festival in Hollywood on 5/1 before arriving on 4K Ultra HD and Digital just four days later.

Per the studio’s press release: “In celebration of its 75th anniversary, Alice in Wonderland has been meticulously restored and remastered in 4K Ultra HD by the Walt Disney Film Restoration team. Over nine months, artists completed a digital scan of the original nitrate Successive Exposure (SE) negatives, followed by extensive clean-up to address dust, warping, and age-related wear. The team also referenced original production artwork preserved by the Walt Disney Animation Research Library to ensure the restoration remained true to the filmmakers’ original intent, collaborating closely with Walt Disney Animation Studios veteran Michael Giaimo to review every shot and refine color and luminance.

“The original animation artists’ work on Alice in Wonderland is stunning, and we’re proud to present it with renewed clarity and vibrancy,” said Kevin Schaeffer, Director of Restoration & Library Management. “This milestone restoration brings new depth and dimension to the film’s imaginative world, offering a vibrant presentation for longtime fans and a new generation of audiences alike.”

The physical release will include both 4K and Blu-ray as well as a Digital code. The 4K will be a 66 GB disc, with the film framed at the 1.33:1 aspect ratio. Look for it to include Dolby Vision HDR (compatible with HDR10). Audio will be in lossless 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio format. The Blu-ray in the package appears to be the exact same disc released in 2011 for the 60th anniversary, so all of those extras will carry over as well. You can see the cover artwork above left and also here below (we expect pre-orders to start in the next couple of weeks)…

And here’s a couple of before and after restoration examples (the restored 4K image vs the raw 4K scans)…

All right, I’ll be back with LOTS more Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD release news first thing in the morning. [Editors Note: Id originally planned a second post today, but it turns out theres WAY more to include than I expected, so it’s taking time to compile it all.]

Stay tuned!
