Kino’s The Good, the Bad and the Ugly: 50th, plus U2: Joshua Tree & reviews of Cinema Paradiso & Hellions

All right, just a quick one today, but we do bring you another pair of new Blu-ray reviews this afternoon…

Tim has checked out Scream Factory’s new IFC Midnight release, the B-horror title Hellions.

Also, our old friend Matt Rowe has revisited a classic in Giuseppe Tornatore’s Cinema Paradiso, finally available in the U.S. in the form of Arrow Academy’s terrific 2-disc Special Edition Blu-ray (formerly available only in the U.K.) that includes both the restored Theatrical Version and The Director’s Cut plus extras. In announcement news today, the big news is that Kino Lorber has just announced that they’re working on a new 50th Anniversary Blu-ray and DVD release of Sergio Leone’s iconic spaghetti western The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1967). The disc, expected to be street this summer (specific street date TBA) will include both the original U.S. Theatrical Cut in HD for the first time ever, as well as the Extended Cut, both mastered from 4K transfers. The 2-disc set will also include a huge slate of extras. Here’s the breakdown from Kino:

Disc One:

  • 4K transfer of the Original U.S. Theatrical Cut
  • New audio commentary by film historian Tim Lucas
  • “Trailers from Hell” with Ernest Dickerson
  • Newly Restored 2.0 Mono Audio
  • M.O.S. Deleted Scene of Blondie in the desert finding skeletons
  • Trailers for Sergio Leone Westerns

Also today, Universal has announced the 4/11 Blu-ray and DVD release of the supernatural thriller The Bye Bye Man, with the Digital HD release set for 3/28.

Well Go USA has set Legend of Bruce Lee: Volume Two for release as a 3-disc DVD collection on 4/4. The set will include 10 episodes for SRP $24.98. The company has also announced that their previously announced The Phantasm Collection Blu-ray box set will now street on 4/11. Also... “In addition to the previously released archival material included in the box set, Phantasm creator Don Coscarelli has produced hours of never-before-seen material, featuring new interviews with cast and filmmakers, as well as rare archival materials.” So adjust your plans accordingly.

We’ve learned that Lionsgate’s Orange Is the New Black: Season Four, which streets on 5/9, will include a gag reel, the Visitation: Set Tour featurette, and audio commentaries with the cast and crew on 3 episodes (including It Sounded Nicer in My Head, The Animals, and Toast Can’t Never Be Bread Again).

And for music fans, Universal Music has just announced that they’re releasing new deluxe box set editions of U2’s The Joshua Tree album in honor of its 30th Anniversary. You can learn more here at the band’s official website.
