We start today with two more new disc reviews...

Stephen has taken a look at Adrian Lyne’s Indecent Proposal (1993), as recently released in 4K Ultra HD by Kino Lorber Studio Classics.

And Tim has given Paramount’s controversial new 4K Ultra HD release of Sean S. Cunningham’s Friday the 13th (1980) an in-depth look.

That last title has unfortunately caused some debate and division among reviewers and fans of the film for what appear to be revisionist remastering and grading choices, particularly compared to the recent Scream Factory release (which was highly rated by all).

In any case, both titles—and these reviews—are worth your time and attention if you’re a fan of these films.

Welcome to a new edition of Pick-Ups!

I hope you’re all enjoying your various Halloween marathons, parties, and other activities. I’ve been busy getting a lot of reviews ready as this has been a heavy couple of months for horror releases, as I’m sure you already know. I know I won’t get to all of it before the month is out, but I’ll get to as many of them as I can. I have some good titles lined up for the rest of this week and, hopefully, we won’t have a repeat of Friday and we can stay on schedule.

More Halloween goodness on the way. This past week, we finally managed to get up all of our decorations, which was a huge job, both inside and outside the house. We’ve also been watching a ton of Halloween-related movies, like I’m sure most of you have. It’s certainly more appealing than keeping up with the current election, that’s for sure.

Anyways, don’t forget that both Turner Classic Movies and IFC are showing a ton of great horror movies this month. Not to be outdone, you may want to check out what AMC is doing this month as well. There’s certainly plenty of options in the horror department.

Welcome to a new edition of Pick-Ups!

Whew. Lemme tell ya. I love Halloween, but it wears me out every year. There’s so much going on, including tons of reviews for the site, that it’s difficult to keep track of it all and still be standing at the end of the day. And unfortunately, I wasn’t able to attend the Young Frankenstein screening that I mentioned last week as it was sold out, but I may or may not try to attend the encore presentation of it. We’ll see.

Also, I mentioned last week that Turner Classic Movies is showing a ton of great horror movies this month, but you may also want to check out IFC’s schedule. They have some great old B-movie from the 1950s and 1960s that they’re airing regularly, every morning. Definitely something worth putting on while having your coffee if you’re a horror fan.

Ahead of this week’s CES convention in Las Vegas, Warner Home Video has announced that it will release some 35 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray titles in 2016, all with high dynamic range, including 4 at launch (likely in February). The launch titles will include Mad Max: Fury Road, San Andreas, The Lego Movie, and Pan. Additional catalog titles planned for release later in the year will include Man of Steel and Pacific Rim. And the studio expects to release theatrical new release titles on UHD BD day and date with regular Blu-ray and DVD. Select titles will include Dolby Atmos audio.  [Read on here…]

All right, we’ve got a couple cool things of you guys today, plus we’re issuing a challenge to the folks in charge at Warner Home Video. More on that in a sec.

First, the good Dr. Jahnke has just posted his penultimate Blu-ray review in this year’s Hell Plaza Oktoberfest, and it’s a Christmas crossover horror classic: The Silent Night, Deadly Night: 30th Anniversary Edition from Anchor Bay!

We’d like to take a moment to give a hearty Bits “Huzzah!” to Jahnke for having completed his work on this year’s Fest! The final review of the season is in the can as they say, and it’s a goodun. So check back tomorrow for that. Well done, Adam!  [Read on here…]

We’ll have more for you here on The Bits in a little bit, but first just a quick heads-up: Amazon.com has begun taking pre-orders for Warner’s Batman: The Complete Television Series – Limited Edition. The Blu-ray and DVD sets street in November (exact street date TBA), but the SRP for the BD set is a hefty $269.97 (or $188.98 with Amazon’s 30% discount). That might scare off a few people. Yikes. The big news today is that Universal has set the Universal Classic Monsters: The Complete 30-Film Collection for DVD only release on 9/2 (SRP $199.98), The 21-disc set includes the previous Legacy Collection DVD sets of Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy, The Wolf Man, The Invisible Man, Creature from the Black Lagoon, and Phantom of the Opera, along with all the extras. You also get the sequel/related films The Bride of Frankenstein, Son of Frankenstein, The Ghost of Frankenstein, House of Frankenstein, Werewolf of London, Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man, She-Wolf of London, Dracula’s Daughter, Son of Dracula, House of Dracula, The Invisible Man Returns, The Invisible Woman, Invisible Agent, The Invisible Man’s Revenge, The Mummy’s Hand, The Mummy’s Tomb, The Mummy’s Ghost, The Mummy’s Curse, Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein, Abbot and Costello Meet the Invisible Man, Abbot and Costello Meet the Mummy, Revenge of the Creature, and The Creature Walks Among Us.
