All right, we’ve got a bunch of interesting studio and indie release announcements today, including some new titles, catalog titles, TV stuff and more.

First though, our own Dr. Adam Jahnke has turned in a new Jahnke’s Electric Theatre column today, featuring the latest installment of An Honor to Be Nominated. This time, Adam looks back at Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather, Part III. Enjoy!

Now then... announcement news... 20th Century Fox is releasing the indie music hit Once on Blu-ray on 4/1 (SRP $19.99) but only as an Amazon.com exclusive. Following on BD on 4/29, also as an Amazon exclusive, is Notes on a Scandal (SRP $19.99), which stars Cate Blanchette, Judi Dench and Bill Nighy. You can see the cover artwork for both titles below. Fox will also widely release an Ice Age 4-movie BD set on 4/1 (SRP $49.99), as well as The King of Comedy: 30th Anniversary Edition on 3/25. [Read on here...]

Sweet Charity: The Roadshow Engagements

“The Musical with a Heart of Gold”

The Digital Bits is pleased to present this retrospective commemorating the 45th anniversary of the release of Sweet Charity, starring Shirley MacLaine as Charity Hope Valentine and highlighted by numerous musical numbers, including “Rich Man’s Frug,” “The Rhythm of Life,” and “I’m a Brass Band.”

Though not yet released on Blu-ray Disc (Universal…what are you waiting for?), The Bits celebrates the musical’s 45th anniversary with a detailed listing of the film’s original, major-market roadshow engagements in the United States and Canada as well as an interview with a trio of roadshow history authorities.  [Read on here…]

First things first today: Our own Michael Coate has turned in a new History, Legacy & Showmanship column in which he looks back at the original roadshow release of Sweet Charity, which celebrates its 45th anniversary today. The piece includes a great and lengthy roundtable interview with a trio of leading experts on the film’s history, so don’t miss it. Enjoy!

In other news today, Disney has revealed that Thor: The Dark World (which streets on 2/25) is not going to be available in BD/DVD Combo versions as originally announced, but rather a Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray Combo, and single-disc Blu-ray and DVD editions, all with digital copy. This appears to be part of a broader shift by the studio away from BD/DVD Combos. Members of the Disney Movie Club who had pre-ordered the announced BD3D/BD/DVD Combo have had their orders shifted to the BD3D/BD version. And as you can see from the art below, the versions available for pre-order on Amazon have changed too.  [Read on here...]

We’re closing out the week with a trio of new Blu-ray reviews from Tim Salmons, who’s offered up his thoughts on Synapse’s Maniac Cop, and Blue Underground’s Maniac Cop 2: Collector’s Edition and Maniac Cop 3: Badge of Silence – Collector’s Edition. Meanwhile, I’m working on some new BD reviews for next week, and don’t forget that we posted Jeff’s look at the Region B/German release of the classic Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series box set last night.  [Read on here…]

All right, there’s not a lot of news to report this afternoon and we’ve been working new Blu-ray reviews all day. So today’s post is limited to this…

Longtime classic Battlestar Galactica fan and expert Jeff Kleist has turned in his in-depth review of Koch Media GmbH’s Region B/Amazon Germany-exclusive Blu-ray release of Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series, which also includes the complete spin-off series Galactica 1980. Even given the hoops you have to jump through, as a Region A consumer, to obtain an all region (and PAL compatible) BD player and a PAL compatible display, if you’re a fan of this franchise the German set is your only HD option… and it also happens to be pretty terrific. Click here to read all the details in Jeff’s review.

We have more news and BD reviews to come tomorrow, so stay tuned!
