We’re closing out the week here with some good release news and another Blu-ray review for you. First the review…

I’ve given Warner’s Blade Runner 2049 an in-depth look on Blu-ray 3D, a solid disc that’s Best Buy-exclusive but that’s also rather hard to find at the moment. It seems to be shipping in low quantities, as many of the retailer’s stores don’t have the disc in stock and you can’t currently find it for sale on their website either. In any case, you can read my thoughts here.

In announcement news today, Kino has set a pair of classic Gloria Swanson silent comedies, both directed by Allan Dwan, for release on Blu-ray on 4/10 as part of their Studio Classics line-up. They include Manhandled (1924) and Stage Struck (1925). Each is mastered from recent 2K scans, and will include audio commentaries, booklet essays, and accompanying piano scores. [Read on here…]

First of all, we’d like to announce that The Digital Bits is teaming up with the fine folks over at Midnight’s Edge for a new video blog series in which we’ll be talking about the latest Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD news, home video industry issues, the latest movies, technology, and more. The current plan is to create about two segments a month, featuring myself, Tim Salmons, or both, joined in video roundtable discussion by others from Midnight’s Edge. [Read on here…]

Now then, we’ve got more release news for you today…

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has just announced Joe Wright’s Darkest Hour for Blu-ray and DVD release on 2/27, with the Digital release set for 2/6. There is no 4K Ultra HD release currently planned. Extras will include audio commentary by Wright and two featurettes (Into Darkest Hour and Gary Oldman: Becoming Churchill). As some of you know, this film was just nominated for Best Picture in the forthcoming Academy Awards and Oldman was nominated for Best Actor. You can see the cover artwork at left and below. We’re starting the day with a new Blu-ray review from our own Tim Salmons, who takes look at Antonio Margheriti’s Yor, the Hunter from the Future: 35th Anniversary Edition from Mill Creek Entertainment. The title streeted last Tuesday and is now available. You can read that here.

In release news today, Amazon is now taking pre-orders on 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment’s The X-Files: The Complete Season 11 on Blu-ray and DVD ($29.99 and $19.99). Street date is still TBA.

Our friends over at Twilight Time have announced their April Blu-ray release slate, which is set to include Paul Schrader’s Auto Focus (2002), Philip Dunne’s Blue Denim (1959), Jacques Demy’s Model Shop (1969), and Martin Ritt’s No Down Payment (1957). [Read on here…]

All right, let’s start the week with some more release news…

Kino Lorber has just announced the 3/20 Blu-ray and DVD release of No Orchids for Miss Blandish (1948) as part of its Studio Classics line. Kino is also releasing a double feature Blu-ray of Mike Binder films on 2/27, including Crossing the Bridge and Indian Summer. The company will also release James Cruze’s Covered Wagon (1923) on Blu-ray on 2/20. This is widely considered to be the first Western epic. And on 3/13, look for them to release Revenge of the Cheerleaders (1976) on DVD only for Code Red.

MVD has set The Return of the Swamp Thing for release on Blu-ray on 5/8. The set will include both Blu-ray and DVD in one package. [Read on here…]

We’re closing out the week today with another pair of new Blu-ray reviews from Tim, including JD’s Revenge from Arrow Video and also Attack Force Z from Umbrella Entertainment. Do give them a look.

In announcement news today, Lionsgate has set Hèctor Hernández Vicens’s Day of the Dead: Bloodline for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 2/6.

Kino Lorber Studio Classics has revealed that it will release Topaze (1933) on Blu-ray and DVD on 3/6. Extras will include audio commentary by film historian Kit Ellinger and a trailer. Better still, Kino will release a The Lion in Winter: 50th Anniversary Edition (1968) on Blu-ray and DVD on 3/13, mastered from a 2016 4K restoration, featuring audio commentary by director Anthony Harvey, an interview with sound recordist Simon Kaye, both 5.1 and 2.0 audio, and the trailer. All right, we’ve got a bunch of server work going on here at The Bits today, but we do have a few big title announcements that we wanted to make sure we updated you on...

First up, Warner Bros Home Entertainment has just officially set DC’s Justice League for release on Blu-ray Combo, Blu-ray 3D Combo, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD Combo on 3/13 (SRP $35.99, $44.95, $44.95, and $28.98, respectively), with the Digital release expected on 2/13. Extras on the Blu-ray versions will include 11 behind-the-scenes featurettes (including Road to Justice, Heart of Justice, Technology of the Justice League, Justice League: The New Heroes, The Return of Superman, Steppenwolf the Conqueror, Scene Studies: Revisiting the Amazons, Scene Studies: Wonder Woman’s Rescue, Scene Studies: Heroes Park, Scene Studies: The Tunnel Battle, and Suit Up: The Look of the League). [Note: A Walmart-exclusive retail version will have one deleted scene.] All of the Blu-ray versions will feature Dolby Atmos audio. Meanwhile, the big news today is that Criterion has just announced their April Blu-ray release slate, which is set to include Leo McCarey’s The Awful Truth (Cat #917 – Blu-ray and DVD) and Sergei Parajanov’s The Color of Pomegranates (Cat #918 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 4/17, and Sofia Coppola’s The Virgin Suicides (Cat #920 – Blu-ray and DVD) and Jim Jaramusch’s Dead Man (Cat #919 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 4/24. They’re also releasing Eclipse Series 46: Ingrid Bergman’s Swedish Years on DVD on 4/10, including The Count of the Old Town (1935), Dollar (1938), Intermezzo (1936), Walpurgis Night (1935), A Woman’s Face (1938), and June Night (1940). Good afternoon, Bits readers. Hope you’re all having a fine day. Obviously, this is the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day holiday here in the States, so there’s not a lot of work getting done today. But I’m having trouble concentrating today for another reason Minnesota Vikings fans will appreciate. Whew! It’s going to take me a few days to calm down after the end of that playoff game.
