An Animated Trek: A 50th Anniversary Retrospective
“The Animated Series was the first real demonstration that Star Trek had a life beyond The Original Series. It was the beginning of a huge period of Trek merchandise and fan interest that eventually paved the way for the Trek movies and subsequent TV shows, and it was an Emmy-winning program that brought some of Trek's sophistication to Saturday morning.” — Jeff Bond, co-author of Star Trek: The Motion Picture—Inside the Art & Visual Effects
The Digital Bits and History, Legacy & Showmanship are pleased to present this retrospective commemorating the 50th anniversary of Star Trek: The Animated Series, the first “sequel” show to Gene Roddenberry’s legendary 1960s science-fiction series.
For the occasion, The Bits has reached out to several Treksperts and animation authorities and even an original Trek writer, each of whom reflects on the series, its virtues, and where it stands in the Trek franchise. [Read on here...]
Kubo and the Two Strings & Star Trek: Animated official, plus Eight Days a Week, Bubba Ho-Tep & more
All right, we’ve got two reviews for you today. As expected we’ve got my thoughts on Shout! Factory’s Flight of the Butterflies in 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, which I think is their best release on the format to date. I’ve reviewed the Warner Archive’s Longmire: Complete Seasons 1-4 on Blu-ray this morning too. The DVDs are available from Warner Bros Home Entertainment, the Blu-rays via Warner Archive, and you can stream the series – which is terrific – on Netflix. The new season of Longmire debuts on Netflix tomorrow, so do give it a look. I think you’ll really enjoy it. [Read on here…]

We’ve got a short post for you today, but it has some good stuff in it...
For starters, we’ve got a new review for you this afternoon, thanks to our own Tim Salmons, featuring Stars’ new Ash vs Evil Dead: The Complete First Season on Blu-ray Disc. The title arrives in stores tomorrow, and it’s pretty damn good. Do give it a look.
The big announcement news today is that 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has just officially set Independence Day: Resurgence for release on Blu-ray Combo, Blu-ray 3D Combo, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray on 10/18, with the Digital HD version expected on 9/27. [Read on here…]

Sorry about the lack of a Tuesday post. I was working on a project late on Monday night and ended up not getting a wink of sleep. You know how it happens that, once you start thinking about something you just can’t stop, sleep be damned? So anyway, by Tuesday morning I was exhausted. Nevertheless, it seems there’s been quite a bit of news since then…
First up, it appears that there’s an error on the new Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan – Director’s Cut Blu-ray (see my review here). During the Kobayashi Maru scene that opens the film, the same shot of Sulu is mistakenly repeated twice. Unlike the two lines removed from the DC by director Nicholas Meyer (near the end of the film – see my review) that wasn’t deliberate – it was just a mistake. Hell… I have to say, I missed it too, even though I know the film well and watched it twice. Anyway, the studio is already aware of the issue and almost certainly is going to correct it (in fact, I’m certain they will, but they need to get a statement prepared and get plans in place), which means a organizing a fix and a disc exchange program, etc. As soon as we get the official word back from our contacts there. we’ll let you know. All right, we’ve got a couple things for you all today here at The Bits to close out the week...
First, we’ve learned that Panasonic’s forthcoming new Ultra HD Blu-ray player, the DMP-UB900, will feature Blu-ray 3D compatibility. That’s good news for those of you who are serious BD enthusiasts and have been waiting for this unit. It’s only available in Europe at the moment (for around £600, which is about $870) and we don’t have a US street date or SRP yet, but it is coming to our shores by mid-year. Meanwhile, click here to read What Hi-Fi?’s review of the European version of the player. [Read on here…]

First up today, a quick side note: Our own Tim Salmons has turned in a review of Criterion’s Judex on Blu-ray, a French crime film from 1963 that’s actually an homage to a 1916 silent film of the same name. It’s a gorgeous B&W classic from director Georges Franju. Don’t miss it.
Now then… I promised you guys a Star Trek TV on Blu-ray post. [Read on here…]
