We’ve got some more new release news for you today, but first another review...

Tim has taken a deep dive into Severin Films’ The Amicus Collection box set, which includes Asylum, And Now the Screaming Starts, and The Beast Must Die! on Blu-ray, each with significant extras. The box streeted on 1/16 and if you’re a fan of these films it’s well worth a look. So enjoy Tim’s review!

The big news today is that Scream Factory has just announced the It’s Alive Trilogy for release as a Blu-ray box set on 5/15. A potentially great title aside, the most interesting aspect of this is that these are Warner Bros titles, so it seems possible that this could be just the first of several titles coming to BD from Shout!/Scream and Warner in 2018. We’re closing out the week here with some good release news and another Blu-ray review for you. First the review…

I’ve given Warner’s Blade Runner 2049 an in-depth look on Blu-ray 3D, a solid disc that’s Best Buy-exclusive but that’s also rather hard to find at the moment. It seems to be shipping in low quantities, as many of the retailer’s stores don’t have the disc in stock and you can’t currently find it for sale on their website either. In any case, you can read my thoughts here.

In announcement news today, Kino has set a pair of classic Gloria Swanson silent comedies, both directed by Allan Dwan, for release on Blu-ray on 4/10 as part of their Studio Classics line-up. They include Manhandled (1924) and Stage Struck (1925). Each is mastered from recent 2K scans, and will include audio commentaries, booklet essays, and accompanying piano scores. [Read on here…]

Kino is also releasing a double feature Blu-ray of Mike Binder films on 2/27, including Crossing the Bridge and Indian Summer. The company will also release James Cruze’s Covered Wagon (1923) on Blu-ray on 2/20. This is widely considered to be the first Western epic. And on 3/13, look for them to release Revenge of the Cheerleaders (1976) on DVD only for Code Red.

The Place to Be

A little preface – I started writing my little nickel and dime pieces for the holidays not before December 25 but after. And I’ll tell you why. How many of us receive as presents gift cards – they’re easily purchased and delivered. However, many have time limits and they’re incredibly easy to lose. Come on, you’ve lost a few, haven’t you?

So, I write up these fabulous video gifts because you have gift money to spend. And please do so.

When I was in the throes of graduation from Purcell Oklahoma High School about 40 years ago, we Seniors observed a tradition that I’m sure in some form or fashion was copied throughout the country – we had to complete a form that listed our personal “likes.” You know, favorite song, favorite type food, favorite movie, etc. [Read on here...]

First off, before we begin today, a number of you have asked about Lionsgate’s delayed Terminator 2: Judgment Day 4K Ultra HD EndoArm edition. We’ve contacted the studio for an update and we’ll keep you informed when they respond.

Now then, in news from CES 2018, the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) says that there’s been an eightfold increase in Ultra HD disc sales in 2017 from the previous year. 4K Ultra HD player sales are also up 133% in 2017 over 2016. FutureSource data suggests that more than a third of households globally anticipate purchasing a 4K TV by 2021, while fully half of the households in Western Europe and the US expect to do so by then. The BDA has also officially added HDR10+, SL-HDR2 (for Philips and Technicolor), and Dolby Vision to the Ultra HD spec, in addition to regular HDR10. They’ve also approved the spec for a new UHD BD recording format for use in Japan. [Read on here…]
