First things first today: Our own Jim Hemphill has just posted a new Blu-ray review, this time featuring a look at Alexander Singer’s 1971 western Captain Apache, now available on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber.
In announcement news today, Universal has set Cary Grant: The Vault Collection for DVD only release on 4/19. Here’s a bit about the collection from the studio’s press site: “Featuring 18 films released between 1932 and 1936, the collection showcases the actor as he perfects his comedic timing and stretches his dramatic skills in a variety of roles alongside such Hollywood legends as Marlene Dietrich, Mae West, Sylvia Sidney, Charles Laughton, Gary Cooper, Randolph Scott and Fredric March. Including his feature film debut, This is the Night, as well as several Pre-Code dramas and comedies plus 5 films never before available to own…” We’ll post the complete list of films as soon as the studio provides it. First things first today: We’re hearing from readers that Samsung’s UBD‑K8500 UHD Blu-ray player is now starting to appear for sale on retailer shelves – including Best Buy – in at least some places around the country. Additionally, Best Buy employees are suggesting in-store that the first UHD Blu-ray titles will start to become available tomorrow (2/11), probably from Lionsgate but maybe also from Fox.
Meanwhile, I’ve now received word from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment that the studio’s first round of UHD Blu-ray titles, including The Martian, Kingsman, Exodus, and Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, will officially be available starting on Sunday 2/14 at Best Buy stores. Note, however, that it’s possible some stores will begin selling them earlier, or that some stores will not have their stock in yet by then. [Read on here…]

Also here at the site today, we’re pleased to welcome our very own Bud Elder back after a bit of an absence. He’s been a busy fellow these last few months, but he returns today with a new View from the Cheap Seats column featuring some thoughts on Film Noir and recent “B” classics on disc. Don’t miss it. On the Pleasures of Film Noir & Bud and the “Bs”
I’m trying to remember when I put it all together, when it dawned on me that there were these wonderful movies, shown, at the time, when there were only three local stations and local guys programmed the movies, after the last late show. They were cheap, even I could see that, but there was just something about these black and whites that kept me fascinated and many a long night I would suffer through local commercials just to see either justice done or perverted.
And the titles – Private Hell 36, Shack Out on 101, Kiss the Blood Off My Hands and Five Against the House. And the actors, has-beens and wanna-bes, but they were just terrific. Tom Neal and Ann Savage and Dennis O’Keefe and Preston Foster and Lawrence Tierney. And this was the “B” list. [Read on here...]
Fox’s X-Files: S8 replacement discs shipping, plus Twilight’s May/June slates & my SPECTRE BD review

Merry Monday. We hope the weekend treated you all well.
Today’s is a quick update, as I was up late last night finishing my review of MGM’s SPECTRE on Blu-ray, which streets tomorrow. So my review of SPECTRE is, in fact, the first thing I wanted to mention here today. I’m a huge Bond fan and have really liked the Daniel Craig era thus far, but with SPECTRE I feel as if EON may have jumped the shark. What would the Bond equivalent be? Jumped the Thames, I suppose. Anyway, do check out the review, see what I mean, and let me know what you think on Facebook and Twitter (via the links above). [Read on here…]

Pick-Ups for the Week of February 1, 2016
Welcome back for a new edition of Pick-Ups!
Thank you for joining me. This week I’m going to tackle a few Blu-ray titles from 2015 that we’ve missed here at the site... and don’t worry, not all of it will be horror. I’ve actually got some good movies that were released last year for you to check out. I thought I’d also let you know that I’m working on a column that’s Lord of the Rings related. I’m not sure when I’ll have that up for you, but hopefully sometime soon. [Read on here...]
