Sony’s amazing Frank Capra at Columbia Collection box includes 20 films, 9 in 4K Ultra HD (!), plus Warner’s new catalog 4Ks pushed from 11/5 to 11/19

We’ve got two more new disc reviews for you today, including...

Stephen’s look at Roger Donaldson’s No Way Out (1987) in 4K Ultra HD from Kino Lorber Studio Classics.

And Tim’s thoughts on Jeff Lieberman’s Squirm (1976) on Blu-ray, from KLSC’s Kino Cult line.

Also today, we’ve have word from retail sources (and customers who have pre-ordered the tiles) that Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment’s recently street-dated 4K catalog titles—Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest (1959), Mel Brooks’ Blazing Saddles (1974), and James Cameron’s The Terminator (1984)—have been pushed to 11/19 from 11/5. That probably has to do with the added time needed to replicate enough production to meet demand. Adjust your plans accordingly.

In any case, be aware that North by Northwest (1959) and Blazing Saddles (1974) will each include HDR10 and Dolby Atmos audio, while The Terminator (1984) will include both Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos audio.

In terms of special features The Terminator will also include Creating The Terminator: Visual Effects & Music, The Terminator: Close to the Real Thing, Unstoppable Force: The Legacy of the Terminator, and 7 deleted scenes. (It appears that the video-based features may be all-new.) Blazing Saddles will include Inappropriate Inspiration: The Blazing Saddles Effect, scene-specific commentary with Mel Brooks, Blaze of Glory: Mel Brooks’ Wild, Wild West, Back in the Saddle, and additional scenes. And North by Northwest will include audio commentary with screenwriter Ernest Legman, North by Northwest: Cinematography, Score, and the Art of the Edit, Destination Hitchcock: The Making of North by Northwest, The Master’s Touch: Hitchcock’s Signature Style, North by Northwest: One for the Ages, and A Guided Tour with Alfred Hitchcock. In announcement news this afternoon, Umbrella Entertainment has just revealed that they’ve completed a new 4K restoration of Richard Stanley’s Hardware (1990) and will be releasing it on physical 4K UHD in the near future.

Meanwhile, in December (12/4 specifically), Umbrella will release Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Pulse (2001) on 4K + Blu-ray, and Alejandro Amenábar’s Open Your Eyes (1997), David and Nathan Zellner’s Sasquatch Sunset (2024), James B. Harris’ Boiling Point (1993), Francis Galluppi’s The Last Stop in Yuma Country (2023), Jack Clark and Jim Weir’s Birdeater (2023), and Adam Kamien and Luke Rynderman’s The Speedway Murders (2023) all on Blu-ray. Look also for Georges Franju’s Eyes Without a Face (1960) on 4K + Blu-ray on 11/6.

PBS has set Leonardo Da Vinci: A Film by Ken Burns, Sarah Burns, and David McMahon (2024) for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 11/19.

Synapse Films has set The McManus Brothers’ The Block Island Sound (2020) for release on Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD on 12/10.

And Unearthed Films will release David Grieco’s Evilenko (2004) on 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray on 12/10.

Now then, the big news today is that Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has just unveiled an amazing new Frank Capra at Columbia Collection, which includes 20 deep-catalog classic films, 9 of which are in 4K Ultra HD! Look for the set to street on 11/19.

The films included are So This Is Love (1929), The Way of the Strong (1928), That Certain Thing (1928), Submarine (1928) in 4K UHD and SDR, The Younger Generation (1929) in 4K UHD and SDR, Flight (1929), Ladies of Leisure (1930), Rain or Shine (1930), Dirigible (1931) in 4K UHD and SDR, The Miracle Woman (1931), Platinum Blonde (1931) in 4K UHD and SDR, American Madness (1932), The Bitter Tea of General Yen (1932), Forbidden (1932), Lady for a Day (1933), It Happened One Night (1934) in 4K UHD with Dolby Vision HDR, Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936) in 4K UHD with Dolby Vision HDR, Lost Horizon (1937) in 4K UHD with Dolby Vision HDR, You Can’t Take It With You (1938) in 4K UHD with Dolby Vision HDR, and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) in 4K UHD with Dolby Vision HDR, as well as the Frank Capra: Mr. America (2024) documentary!
