We’re kicking off the new week with a new Blu-ray review and some announcement news too. First up, that review...

Our own Tim Salmons has checked in with his thoughts on Scream Factory’s new Limited Edition Steelbook Blu-ray release of John Carpenter’s Assault on Precinct 13. Do check it out and watch for more reviews tomorrow.

Speaking of Scream Factory, the company has officially announced the extras you’ll find on their Of Unknown Origin Blu-ray on 5/22. Look for a new 2K scan from the interpositive, 3 new featurettes (The Origins of Unknown Origin, That Rat Movie, and Hey, Weren’t You in Scanners?), audio commentary director George P. Cosmatos and actor Peter Weller, theatrical trailers, and a still gallery.

In announcement news today, Paramount has revealed that they’re re-releasing Trading Places on Blu-ray on 6/12 in honor of its 35th anniversary. The same day, they’re also re-issuing Coming to America on the format in honor of its 30th anniversary. All the legacy extras will carry over and this time the discs will include a Digital Copy as well. [Read on here...]

We’re starting today with four new disc reviews, including looks at Lionsgate and Summit’s Knowing and Sony’s Across the Universe in 4K Ultra HD by me (with our late great friend and Bits family member Barrie Maxwell), as well as Tim’s take on MVD’s Black Eagle: Special Edition and AGFA and Something Weird’s The Violent Years on Blu-ray. Also today, we have an update on Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. Warner Bros. has now officially announced (see this link) that the film is returning to theaters for a limited run in 70mm starting on 5/18 in honor of its 50th anniversary. The 4K Ultra HD pre-order page was recently pulled down from Amazon and now we know why: The street date had been listed as 5/8, but the title is now slated to arrive this fall, after the theatrical run. Both the 70mm return to theaters and the 4K release are being presented by director Christopher Nolan. [Read on here...]

All right, we’ve got some interesting release news to report today. First though…

We’ve posted several new Blu-ray reviews in the last couple of days, including my take on Warner Archive’s Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero and the Kino Lorber Studio Classics title Joan of Arc, as well as Tim’s thoughts on Warner Archive’s Joe Versus the Volcano, Arrow Video’s There’s Always Vanilla, Shout!/Scream Factory’s Colossus: The Forbin Project and 78/52: Hitchcock’s Shower Scene, and Universal’s Happy Death Day. Now then, Shout! Factory has announced that they’re going to be bringing Disney’s Gravity Falls: The Complete Series to Blu-ray and DVD on 7/24 (SRP $99.99 and $59.97 respectively, though if you purchase them from Shout! directly you get $20 off the BD and $10 off the DVD). [Read on here...]

All right, we’re starting the new week this afternoon with a trio of fresh Blu-ray reviews…

First up, Tim has checked out Scalpel (1977) on BD from Arrow Video, as well as Val Guest’s When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth (1970) from the Warner Archive Collection.

I’ve also just posted my thoughts on the Warner Archive’s long-awaited Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero on Blu-ray, a great upgrade of the original direct-to-DVD release and a nice aperitif for their upcoming release of the complete Batman: The Animated Series on Blu-ray later in 2018. We’re starting today with three new Blu-ray reviews from Tim, including Synapse Films’ Unearthed & Untold: The Path to Pet Sematary – Special Edition documentary and their Suspiria: Two-Disc Special Edition, as well as Umbrella Entertainment’s Aussie import Suspiria: 40th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray. All three discs, and the reviews, are worth a look.

In release news today, Universal has set Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread for 4K Ultra HD on 5/8, nearly a month after the Blu-ray and DVD release which is currently set for 4/10. [Read on here...]

All right, first up today we have two more Blu-ray reviews from Tim for you, including his thoughts on Warner Archive’s Doc Hollywood and also Dragonwyck from Twilight Time. Both are worth a look. And a little later today I’ll be back with my review of Sony’s The Dark Crystal on 4K Ultra HD (I’ll add the link here when it’s up).

Now then, the BIG news this afternoon (weren’t we just talking about this yesterday?) is that Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has now officially announced the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of the Wachowskis’ 1999 sci-fi/cyberpunk classic The Matrix on 5/22 (SRP $41.99). The 4K release has been produced from a new 4K scan of the original camera negative, a remaster supervised by the film’s director of photography, Bill Pope. The resulting image has been given HDR color grades in both HDR10 and Dolby Vision, both of which will be featured on this 4K UHD release. Furthermore, the 4K release will feature Dolby Atmos object-based audio. The actual 4K disc will also include a written introduction by the Wachowskis, along with all four previously-available audio commentaries (including the Philosopher, Critics, Cast & Crew, and Composer tracks). Now then, we’ve got some interesting news today for you as well...

First up, it appears that Warner’s The Matrix and Fox’s Die Hard, which we’ve mentioned here at The Bits recently are both coming to 4K Ultra HD (see here and here), will street in 4K sometime in May. Neither title is as yet officially announced, but multiple industry sources now are pointing to likely May street dates. And we now have European retail temp cover artwork for The Matrix too, which you can see at left. [Read on here...]

We’re wrapping up the week with no less than four new disc reviews today, including Tim’s thoughts on The In-Laws from Criterion, the Viva L’Italia: Special Edition from Arrow Academy, and the Basket Case: Limited Edition from Arrow Video, all on Blu-ray.

Tim has checked out Umbrella Entertainment’s region free Blu-ray of The Land That Time Forgot (1975) and I’ve turned in my thoughts on 20th Century Fox’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and Murder on the Orient Express (2017) in 4K Ultra HD. All three titles are work a look, and Murder on the Orient Express is straight-up 4K demo material if you’re looking for such. Watch for my review of Sony’s The Dark Crystal in 4K soon as well.
