Pick-Ups for the week of August 3, 2015 – It’s Mystery Science Theater 3000!
Welcome back to my Dailies feature, Pick-Ups!
It’s designed to feature older Blu-ray and DVD releases that we haven’t gotten around to reviewing until now (sorry about that!), as well as highlight select international releases and other unique titles on disc. I try to do this column on a weekly basis, so be sure to check back regularly for more titles that are worthy of your attention.
Being a big fan of the cult TV show Mystery Science Theater 3000, I decided that it was time for The Bits to have all of the wonderful boxed sets available from Shout! Factory in our database. [Read on here...]

All right, we have a couple bits of news for you today but first this...
Go see Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation. Seriously, don’t even hesitate. I saw it last night up at the Chinese Theater and Hollywood, and it’s terrific. It’s one of the best spy action thrillers I’ve seen in a long time. Way better than Kingsman, slightly better than the last Mission: Impossible film (Ghost Protocol), and I think better even than some of the recent Bond films. The action, pacing and suspense are all excellent and very old school, there’s good moments of humor, the villain is great, the female lead is great. It’s just a damn fine time at the movies. You’ll really enjoy it, I think. [Read on here…]

Okay, first things first: You may have noticed that we’ve added a new Amazon graphic to The Bits homepage (above right, in the sidebar column). What that widget allows you to do is to see the best of the day’s Blu-ray and DVD deals on Amazon. You can scroll through them and new ones are added all the time. Shopping through that widget helps support The Bits. We’ll be adding more such widgets gradually, as we see what you find useful, so please e-mail us or message us on Facebook and let us know what you think. We really do appreciate it. [Read on here…]

This morning, I had the chance to participate in a virtual roundtable discussion featuring Victor Matsuda, the Blu-ray Disc Association’s Global Promotions Committee Chair, Paul Erickson, Senior Analyst for IHS Technology, and TK Arnold of Home Media Magazine. The session started with a video presentation in which the group discussed the outlook for UHD BD and confirmed that licensing of the format spec is going to begin very soon, which means the first official UHD BD players and movie titles could appear by year’s end. All right, folks. Sorry I missed yesterday’s post and that today’s is a little brief. I’ve been dealing with a medical concern over the last week or so – since returning to Comic-Con – and it’s had me worried and more than a little preoccupied. Fortunately, with the help of a very fine doctor, I got to the bottom of it yesterday, and it turned out not to be serious, easily addressable and all is well. Whew! So anyway, I’ve got a quick post for you today, and then I’ll be back tomorrow with a lot more. [Read on here…]
