First up today, we’ve got a little follow-up on the BDA’s Ultra HD Blu-ray announcement, specifically a few additional technical clarifications...

The video resolution is 3840x2160, with disc capacity at 66GB (dual-layer) and 100GB (triple-layer) – at data rates of 108 mbps and 128 mbps respectively – using the HEVC codec (H.265) via HDMI 1.2 and 2.0, as well as HDCP 1.4 and 2.2. The “digital bridge” system (for Digital Copy) is optional and consists of copy features that enables local playback. What that means for each disc/player is up to the manufacturer and although the Ultra HD Blu-ray spec is complete, the BDA is waiting to hear how manufacturers will implement these features.  [Read on here…]

The big news today, without a doubt, is this: The Blu-ray Disc Association has just announced the completion of the technical specification for the Ultra HD Blu-ray format. Consumer electronics manufacturers will be able to license the spec in July, which should lead to the first players arriving in stores either just in time for the holidays this year or (more likely) in Q1 of 2016, with a big rollout at the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas in January.  [Read on here…]

All right, we’ve got a couple good announcements to report today to start the new week.

First of all, Lionsgate has just set Alex Garland’s Ex Machina for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 7/14. Details are still TBA, but we have the temp cover artwork below.

All right, first things first today: Fox’s X-Men: Days of Future Past – The Rogue Cut is now available for Blu-ray pre-order on Amazon.com for release on 7/14. And yes, that IS the official cover artwork there. Click below or on the title link to pre-order (and support The Bits in the process).

Now then... we have a LOT of announcement news today, including a great catalog title announcement update. Let’s get to it...

First, Warner Home Video has announced the release of some new TV titles on Blu-ray and DVD including Person of Interest: Season Four and Vampire Dairies: Season Six on 9/1, and Arrow: Season Three, The Flash: Season One, and Gotham: Season One. We’re starting things off today with another installment of Tim Salmons’ new Dailies feature, Pick-Ups. This week, Tim reviews an older Criterion title on Blu-ray, Orson Welles’ F for Fake, as well as a pair of UK/Region B Blu-ray titles from Arrow, including Time Bandits and The Stuff. We have just a quick update for you this afternoon, as we’re doing a little server work here today.

We’re pleased to present a pair of new Blu-ray reviews for you all to enjoy. First, our own Joe Marchese has turned in a look at Kino Lorber’s recent BD edition of Hal Walker’s At War with the Army (1950), starring Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. Also today, Doogan has taken a nice deep dive into P.T. Anderson’s fascinating Inherent Vice – now on Blu-ray from Warner Home Video – and found it worthy of your time. All right, just a quick update today, but we DO have some pretty exciting news to report...

First, Disney has just set their Aladdin: Diamond Edition for Blu-ray release on 10/13 (SRP $36.99). We know this because Amazon is already taking pre-orders on it. We’re waiting to hear more about the content and extras (we think the official press announcement is a few weeks away yet), but you can see the Blu-ray cover artwork on the left there and you can pre-order it on Amazon by clicking here or on the cover image below.  [Read on here…]

All right, we have just a quick announcement news update today along with a bunch more new Blu-ray cover artwork...

First up, Fox Home Entertainment has set The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 7/14.

For you classic film fans, Warner Archive has just set Thank Your Lucky Stars (1943) for release on BD on 5/19.

Warner is also releasing a pair of complete series sets on Blu-ray on 5/12, including Revolution: The Complete Series and Nikita: The Complete Series.  [Read on here…]
