All right, we’ve got a big week ahead of us here at The Digital Bits. As all of you know, the new James Cameron catalog 4K titles—The Abyss, True Lies, and Aliens—all drop via 4K Digital tomorrow. And we’ve got some big announcement news to share with all of you today as well. But first, we’ve got a new disc review for you...

Now then... there’s big news today, more big news, and yet another piece of big news. So let’s start with that first one...

Paramount Home Entertainment has just officially set Herbert Ross’ original Footloose (1984) for release on 4K Ultra HD on 2/13/24. We’re awaiting confirmation of the A/V specs on this one, but the title will come in both Amaray and Steelbook packaging, and will have a Blu-ray and Digital copy code. All right, we’ve got a lot of ground to cover today to close out the week. But first as always, we have more new disc reviews for you, including at least one from each member of The Bits review team!

First, I’ve posted my in-depth review of James Cameron’s Avatar (2009) in 4K Ultra HD from 20th Century Studios, which is a really beautiful 2K to 4K upsample and remaster. Plus, it carries over nearly four hours worth of extras from the 2010 Blu-ray release, and it features a fantastic and (thankfully!) uncompromised Dolby Atmos mix as well. If you’re a fan, it’s well worth the upgrade. And note that our review of Avatar: The Way of Water in 4K Ultra HD will follow this weekend, so be sure to watch for it.

Also new from Stephen is a review of Peter Greenaway’s Drowning by Numbers (1998) in 4K Ultra HD from Severin Films.

Tim has reviewed Sammo Hung’s Warriors Two (1978) on Blu-ray from Arrow Video, as well as Alex Proyas’ Spirits of the Air, Gremlins of the Clouds (1989) on Blu-ray from Umbrella Entertainment and Vinegar Syndrome.

Dennis has weighed in with a look at William Edwards’ Dracula (The Dirty Old Man) (1969) on Blu-ray from AGFA and Vinegar Syndrome.

And finally, Stuart has checked in with a look at Maigret: Season 4 (1963), the classic BBC TV series, which comes to Blu-ray from Kino Classics.

All right, it’s been a week since we’ve had a news update here at the site, and the reason is two-fold: First, there just hasn’t been a lot of news to report. And second, given that fact, we’ve all been working hard on a TON of new disc reviews here at The Bits. In fact, I’ve personally pledged to post a new 4K Ultra HD review each day all this week here at The Bits. So we’ll start today with the ones I’ve completed so far...

Now available for your reading enjoyment are my reviews of Paramount’s Halo: Season One – Limited Edition Steelbook, Kino Lorber Studio Classics’ Mystery Men, and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment’s Elf and A Christmas Story, all in 4K Ultra HD. But the guys have been busy too...

To this, Tim has added his thoughts on Douglas Trumbull’s Silent Running (4K UHD) and The Count Yorga Collection (Blu-ray) from Arrow Video, the Species: Collector’s Edition (4K UHD) from Scream Factory, and Quiet Days in Clichy (4K UHD) from Blue Underground.

Stephen has contributed his takes on Married to the Mob (Blu-ray), Vortex (Blu-ray), and The Iceman Cometh (Blu-ray) from Vinegar Syndrome, Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons (4K UHD) from Warner, Golden Boy (Blu-ray) from Imprint, X (4K UHD) from Capelight Pictures, and The Sporting Club (Blu-ray) from Kino Lorber.

We’ve got just one quick final news post for you here at The Bits this week to report that Arrow Video has officially announced their April Blu-ray and 4K slate, and there are some real gems in the mix as well as a pair of great new Ultra HD releases.

On Blu-ray in the US and Canada only, look for The Eight Diagram Pole Fighter (1984) in two different cover art SKUs (original theatrical art and new artwork) on 4/5.

In the UK only, look for Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1986) on both Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD on 4/18.

And in all three regions, look for Terry Gilliam’s 12 Monkeys (1995) on 4K Ultra HD on 4/26, as well as Twisting the Knife: Four Films by Claude Chabrol—which will include The Swindle (1997), The Color of Lies (1999), Nightcap (2002), and The Flower of Evil (2003)—also on 4/26 on Blu-ray only, and Rogue Cops and Racketeers: Two Crime Thrillers by Enzo G. Castellari on Blu-ray only—which includes the films The Big Racket (1976) and The Heroin Busters (1977)—on 4/19. [Read on here...]

We have a couple more new disc reviews this afternoon and more release news for you as well. As always, reviews first...

Stephen has checked out a pair of Blu-ray titles today, including Craig Lahiff’s Black and White (2002) from Umbrella Entertainment—another Sunburnt Screens label title—and also Allan Arkush’s Get Crazy (1983) from Kino Lorber Studio Classics. Both are well worth a look, and it sounds like Get Crazy in particular includes a bunch of great bonus content. So enjoy Stephen’s reviews.

Now then, our friends over at The Warner Archive Collection have begun to reveal some great new catalog Blu-ray titles that they’re working on for release in 2022 (they’re listed as “coming soon” at the moment) and the three they’ve mentioned so far are real gems.

First up is Michael Curtiz’s Captains of the Clouds (1942) starring James Cagney. This is mastered from a new 4K scan of the original nitrate Technicolor camera negatives. Extras will include a 1942 Newsreel, the vintage 1942 color WB short Rocky Mountain Big Game, the classic Bugs Bunny cartoons What’s Cookin’, Doc? and Hold the Lion, Please (in HD), and the original theatrical trailer. We’ve got a bunch of ground to cover today, including a TON of new and recent disc reviews, lots of 4K Ultra HD catalog and new release news, and some regular Blu-ray news as well. I’ve been so distracted over the last week or so, what with all of the major announcements and the time required to track down and confirm release rumors, that I’ve neglected to mention the many disc reviews that we’ve posted here at the site during that time. So, let’s tackle those first...

Stephen has turned in his thoughts on Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch (2021) and Scott Cooper’s Antlers (2021) from 20th Century Studios, James C Wasson’s Night of the Demon (1980) from Severin Films, and Dario Argento’s Trauma (1993) from Vinegar Syndrome, all on Blu-ray Disc.

Tim has looked at Barry Sonnenfeld’s The Addams Family (1991) from Paramount, David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive (2001) from Criterion, Dennis Donnelly’s The Toolbox Murders (1978) from Blue Underground, and William Lustig’s Maniac Cop 3: Badge of Silence (1993) from Blue Underground, all in 4K Ultra HD, as well as the Nasty Habits: The Nunsploitation Collection from Severin Films, John Hancock’s Let’s Scare Jessica to Death (1971) from Imprint Films, Mike Judge’s Beavis and Butt-Head Do America (1996) from Paramount, and Brian Trenchard-Smith’s Turkey Shoot (1982) from Umbrella Entertainment, all on Blu-ray.

And Dennis has delivered his take on Frank Capra’s It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) as recently re-issued by Paramount, as well as Hal Ashby’s Harold and Maude (1971), also from Paramount and both released on regular Blu-ray.

All of these titles are worth a look and there’s certainly something for everyone in that line-up. If you’re a fan of It’s a Wonderful Life, don’t forget that our own Michael Coate recently profiled the film for its 75th anniversary in his most recent History, Legacy and Showmanship column here at The Bits—it’s definitely worth a look if you missed at Christmas time. All right, we’ve got a couple things for you today, but first more reviews...

On Friday I posted my in-depth thoughts on Warner’s Middle-Earth 31-Disc Ultimate Collector’s Edition 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray box set, which includes the previous 4K discs of both The Hobbit Trilogy and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (both the theatrical versions and Extended versions), along with the previous Hobbit Trilogy Blu-rays (again both versions) and newly-remastered Lord of the Rings Trilogy Blu-rays (sourced from the new 4K remasters, again both versions of each film). It also has a new bonus disc of content, but omits almost all of the previous content save for the audio commentaries. It’s actually a nice set for those who don’t already have any or all of the previous disc releases, but for diehard fans it’s going to be pretty frustrating. I’ve also posted my review of J. Lee Thompson’s The Guns of Navarone in 4K Ultra HD from Sony, which is a fine release of a classic WWII film.

Also, Stephen has posted his thoughts on Tony Randel’s Ticks (1993) in 4K UHD from Vinegar Syndrome.

And Tim has posted his thoughts on the He Came from the Swamp: The William Grefe Collection re-release on Blu-ray from Arrow Video, which includes six classic films from the Florida-based low budget filmmaker. [Read on here...]

We’re kicking off a new week with a pair of 4K Ultra HD reviews from Sony’s terrific new Columbia Classics 4K Collection: Volume 1 box set, which streets on June 16th. Now available for your reading pleasure are my thoughts on Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove (1964) and David Lean’s Lawrence of Arabia (1962). Both look and sound better than ever. Before you ask, these films are ONLY available in this box set for now, and it does not appear that Sony has any plans to release them individually this year (though it’s certainly possible that could change later in 2020 or 2021).

Also up here at The Bits today is a review of Dorothy Arzner’s Dance, Girl, Dance (1940) on Blu-ray from Criterion by Dennis, and my own look at Kino Lorber’s animated The Inspector (1965-69) on Blu-ray—part of a larger series of reviews on the DePatie-Freleng Collection I hope to post over the coming weeks.

In other news today, Arrow Films has announced a UK only release of David Fincher’s The Game for Blu-ray on July 24th (SRP £44.99). It’s limited to 3K units and will include a 200-page hardback book. On this side of the Pond, Universal controls the title, so we’ll have to wait and see if Arrow Video has licensed it for release here in the States at some point. [Read on here...]

This is just a quick Sunday post to share some breaking news...

At the official Star Trek convention in Las Vegas this afternoon, it was announced that CBS is finally going to be releasing Star Trek: Discovery – Season One on Blu-ray and DVD on 11/13. All 15 episodes will be included along with over two hours worth of special features. Additional details are still to be announced. But this comes straight from CBS and in fact has been shared on social media on the official Star Trek: Discovery Twitter feed.

It was also announced at the convention that another new Star Trek series featuring the return of Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard is being planned for eventual release as a CBS All Access exclusive, for those who may be interested.

One more bit of 4K Ultra HD news… we’ve learned from sources that Sony is going to be releasing David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo on 4K Ultra HD in October or November, probably at the same time as their forthcoming Panic Room. Savvy Blu-ray fans will know that Panic Room has never been released on the format, but there should be a Blu-ray in the UHD package and there will almost certainly be a separate Blu-ray SKU as well.
