We also posted a massive new History, Legacy & Showmanship column from our own Michael Coate last week, featuring a terrific retrospective look back at Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather in honor of the film’s 50th anniversary last year. Now then, thanks to our deep bench of industry sources, we have yet another big piece of news to share about an upcoming 4K catalog title that Warner Bros. is apparently working on. David Fincher’s Se7en (1995) is reportedly coming to 4K UHD from the studio sometime in early 2023. This of course is a New Line title with highly-stylized cinematography by Darius Khondji that should look truly stunning on the format with High Dynamic Range. We expect official word from the studio in the next couple months, and as always retailers will probably leak the details first.
Meanwhile, there’s no update on Sony’s tentatively planned release of Panic Room in 4K UHD, which our sources had told us was in the works earlier this year. It appears to have gone back into production limo in the same way that Warner’s 4K release of Gravity did a while back. When we have more news on either title, we’ll be sure to let you know.
Also today, Universal has set Todd Field’s Tár for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 12/20, though we don’t yet have specifics on the release beyond that. The film stars Cate Blanchett.
Paramount has just officially set Parker Finn’s Smile for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 12/13, with the Digital release expected on 11/15. Extras will include audio commentary with Finn, the Laura Hasn’t Slept short film (that inspired Smile), 2 featurettes (Something’s Wrong with Rose: Making Smile and Flies on the Wall: Inside the Score), and deleted scenes.
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has just announced Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 12/13, with the Digital release set for 11/22.
Sony has also set Better Call Saul: The Complete Series for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 12/6, along with Better Call Saul: Season 6.
And Radiance Films has set a 3-disc Cosa Nostra: Franco Nero in Three Mafia Tales by Damiano Damiani Blu-ray box set for release on 5/2/23 that includes The Day of the Owl, The Case is Closed: Forget It, and How to Kill a Judge.
Radiance will also release Jean-Denis Bonan’s A Woman Kills on Blu-ray on 2/7, with Alain Cavalier’s Fill ‘er Up With Super following on Blu-ray on 3/7.
For TV fans, Paramount is planning to release Yellowstone: Season 5, Part 1 on Blu-ray and DVD sometime early in 2023 (possibly in January).
And here’s a nice surprise: Mill Creek Entertainment is releasing a Peter Falk 4-Film Comedy Collection on Blu-ray on 1/31, featuring The Cheap Detective (1978), Big Trouble (1985), Happy New Year (1986), and Luv (1967).
Finally today, a sad note: The great voice actor Kevin Conroy has died after a brief battle with cancer. As many of you know, Conroy was widely known and well loved for having voiced the Caped Crusader in the highly-acclaimed Batman: The Animated Series and its many animated sequels and spin-offs. For our money, Conroy is the Batman, given that he played the part for so long and so well. Sadly, he was just 66.
