The big news today here at The Bits is that Criterion has just announced their June Blu-ray and DVD release slate and it’s got some real gems. Look for Michelangelo Antonioni’s Le amiche (1955 – Cat# 817 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 6/7, Jean Renoir’s La Chienne (1931 – Cat# 818 – Blu-ray and DVD) and Alexander Hall’s Here Comes Mr. Jordan (1941 – Cat# 819 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 6/14, René Laloux’s animated Fantastic Planet (1973 – Cat# 820 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 6/21, and Olivier Assayas’ Clouds of Sils Maria (2014 – Cat# 822 – Blu-ray and DVD) and Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964 – Cat# 821 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 6/28.  [Read on here…]

Welcome to a new week here at The Bits!  You may have noticed that we didn’t have a My Two Cents post on Friday and there was a very good reason for that, which I’ll good into in a moment. We did, however, post a pair of new disc reviews for you in case you missed them.

First, I offered my thoughts on Warner’s San Andreas in 4K UHD Blu-ray format. Also, Tim posted his thoughts on Arrow Video’s Society: Special Edition on regular Blu-ray Disc. And just today, our own Jim Hemphill has tuned in his two cents on the Coen Brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis, a magnificent film that I appreciate a little more every time I watch it, as delivered to Blu-ray by the fine folks at The Criterion Collection. All three titles are worth a look, so do check them out.  [Read on here…]

Pick-Ups for the Week of March 07, 2016

Welcome to a new edition of Pick-Ups!

Thanks for joining me. This week I’m going to focus on our distribution friends from across the pond (having also recently crossed the pond, as well), Arrow Video. So consider this an Arrow Video Catch-Up week.

And by the way, before we get into it, I didn’t get a chance to go see The Witch since my last column (in which I said I would), but hopefully, I will at some point. Right now I have my sights set on the newly-released Zootopia, which looks like a fun and refreshing bit of Disney animation. Anyways, moving on. [Read on here…]

We’ve got a pair of new disc reviews for you to enjoy today here at the site, starting with Tim’s look at Arrow Video’s new 3-film American Horror Project: Volume 1 Blu-ray box set.

Also, I’ve just completed another 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray review: Sony’s Chappie, which is the first actual full 4K title I’ve seen so far on the format, as opposed to the 2K DI upconverts more common to the first wave of UHD titles. [Read on here…]

I’m working on a few more of those Ultra HD reviews for posting over the next couple days, so today’s update is going to be brief. But we do have a few interesting items for you today...

First up, our own Tim Salmons has just kicked off his latest installments of his Dailies: Pick-Ups column. This week, Tim’s going to catch up with a few great Blu-ray titles from our friends at Arrow Video, the first of which is Buddy Cooper’s The Mutilator (1985). Do give it a look.  [Read on here…]

Okay, we’re rounding out the week with a little title announcement catch-up. My plan had been to post a new UHD review each day all week, but then of course it became obvious that the Star Wars Blu-ray announcement was about to happen and that threw off the plan, as such things often do. I do have a review of Sony’s 4K UHD Blu-ray of Chappie in the works, which is a true 4K title, and I’ll have that for you Monday. Look for more UHD reviews next week as well.

That said, our own Tim Salmons has just posted a review of one of my favorite films of 2015, Ryan Coogler’s Creed, which is now available on Blu-ray from Warner Home Video. It’s a great film with tons of heart – a Rocky sequel that actually stands on its own beautifully. Stars Michael B. Jordan and Sylvester Stallone really shine in it. Do give it a look.  [Read on here…]

All right, folks... as predicted, Disney has just made their official announcement of the home video release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Extras are exactly as leaks predicted. So too are the different retailer exclusives. The good news for you Blu-ray 3D fans if that Disney has confirmed that a Blu-ray 3D version is coming later this year. That suggests that this first release of the film on Blu-ray is just the vanilla version, and that there could be a more elaborate special edition package (with 3D) coming in time to promote the theatrical release of Star Wars: Rogue One during the holiday season. There's no mention of a 4K UHD version, but our sources tell us that Disney isn’t planning to get into the 4K game until late 2016 or early 2017, so it’s possible there could be one then.

In any case, here’s the official press release, with all of the final cover artwork... [Read on here…]
