We’re very pleased this morning to bring you some great breaking release news...

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has just officially set director Robert Zemeckis’ ground-breaking animation/live action comedy Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) for release on 4K Ultra HD on 12/7! You can see the cover artwork at left and also below.

We first reported that this title was coming over a year ago here at The Digital Bits, with studio sources originally providing us with a street date of 10/12. More recently those same sources had suggested to us that the title could slip into early 2022. (The other 4K title we were told to expect along with it—Michael Mann’s Heat (1995)—is likely to be so delayed.) So it’s great to see that work on the Roger Rabbit 4K release has finally been completed in time for a release this year. [Read on here...]

Who Framed Roger Rabbit was shot and finished on film, so this new UHD presentation is the result of a recent 4K scan of the original camera negative (and master interpositive VFX footage). The 4K disc will include HDR10 high dynamic range and a brand new English 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos sound mix.

Per Disney, additional audio options will include English DVS 2.0 Dolby Digital, Spanish 1.0 Mono, and French 5.1 DTS Digital Surround, with subtitles available in English SDH, Spanish, and French.

The package will include the film on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray. You’ll also get a Digital copy code on a paper insert.

Special features will include...

  • Filmmakers’ Audio Commentary – View the film with Audio Commentary by filmmakers Bob Zemeckis, Frank Marshall, Steve Starkey, Jeff Price, Peter Seaman and Ken Ralston.
  • The Roger Rabbit Shorts
    • Tummy Trouble – The accident-prone Roger Rabbit faces new perils when he is left to baby-sit for the mischievous Baby Herman.
    • Roller Coaster Rabbit – Mother takes Baby Herman to the State Fair, and leaves him with Roger Rabbit so she can visit the psychic (fortune-teller).
    • Trail Mix-Up – Roger Rabbit returns in an all-new outdoor adventure that finds the irrepressible Toon star on a hilarious, disaster-filled camping trip.
  • Deleted Scene
    • The Pig Head Sequence – Judge Doom and the weasels teach Eddie Valiant a lesson in a way that only Toontown can. With intro by director Robert Zemeckis.
  • Who Made Roger Rabbit – A behind-the-scenes making of, hosted by Charles Fleischer, the voice of Roger Rabbit.
  • Before and After – Split screen comparison reveals the unbelievable talent of the live-action actors, animators and the special effects.
  • Toon Stand-Ins – Watch as the cast rehearse with life size stand-ins for the toons.
  • Behind the Ears: The True Story of Roger Rabbit – An in-depth, behind-the-scenes documentary.
  • On Set! Benny the Cab – The making of a scene from the movie.

There will also be Best Buy-exclusive Steelbook packaging and you can see that below.

So there you go! A few other news items of note today...

Universal has just updated Frankenstein and The Wolf Man on iTunes/Apple TV to 4K with HDR, so if you have the titles in your digital library there and you’re 4K ready, you should be able to check them out now.

Also, a Kino Lorber Studio Classics source has confirmed that the company will be releasing Kinka Usher’s Mystery Men (1999) in 4K Ultra HD (street date is still TBA). They’ve also apparently set their 4K UHD release of Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) to street on 11/23.

And we’ve got a bit of disappointing news for fans of Kevin Costner’s Open Range: The new 101 Films Blu-ray edition from the UK isn’t worth your time or money. It’s Region B locked, offers no extras whatsoever, and has only LPCM 2.0 stereo audio. That means the best version of Open Range available on disc remains the 2010 Leonine German Blu-ray. It’s also Region B locked, but it offers all of the previous DVD extras & more (including the audio commentary), and it has fine 6.1 DTS-HD Master Audio sound mixes in both English and German. You can find it on Amazon here (but again, keep in mind that you’ll need an all region player to be able to watch it).

All right, that’s all for today. Note that this is probably also our last post for the week. A couple of us here at The Bits have family visiting, so we’re all going to take a day off to let everyone enjoy their time together.

It’s possible there could be a title announcement or two on Friday. Warner in particular is due to announce their long-awaited Middle Earth 4K Collection any time now (for an anticipated 10/5 street date). We’ll post updates on our social media if any news breaks and we’ll update the site here this weekend.

Speaking of which, if you’re not already following me on Twitter here (and also The Digital Bits Twitter feed here), please consider doing so! It’s often the very first place we post breaking news, the latest Blu-ray and 4K information from our sources, and other fun stuff. If you have questions, Twitter is also the easiest place to reach me via private message. I hope to see you there!

Have a great weekend. Stay tuned...
