Stephen’s review of Hideki Takayama’s animated Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend (1989) on Blu-ray from Discotek Media.

Dennis’ review (with an A/V assist by Tim) of Bruce Robinson’s Withnail and I (1987) in 4K Ultra HD from the Criterion Collection.

In release news today, we have an update for you on Universal’s newly-announced 4K Ultra HD release of Knight Rider: The Complete Series (1982-86), which streets on 7/22. We’ve haven’t got confirmation yet on whether all the original broadcast music will be properly sorted (though Turbine’s 2023 Blu-ray review did have it sorted, so it’s reasonable to assume that it will be—you can review our review of that set here). But we have confirmed that the set will include HDR10 high dynamic range, and that in addition to the legacy special features, the set will include two newly-produced extras as well. Tim’s look at Robert S. Baker and Monty Berman’s Jack the Ripper (1959) in 4K Ultra HD from Severin Films.

Stuart’s thoughts on the Audie Murphy Collection IV Blu-ray box set from Kino Lorber Studio Classics, which includes the films Kurt Neumann’s The Kid from Texas (1950), Budd Boetticher’s The Cimarron Kid (1952), and Nathan Juran’s Drums Across the River (1954).

And Dennis’ take on William Friedkin’s Sorcerer (1977) on Blu-ray from the Criterion Collection. (Note that we reviewed the 4K Ultra HD edition here at the site last week.)

In announcement news today, we finally have the official word that Universal Studios Home Entertainment is releasing NBC’s Knight Rider: The Complete Series (1982-86) on 4K Ultra HD on 7/22. The 21-disc set will include all 90 episodes in their original 1.33:1 TV aspect ratio, plus previously released special features including the Knight Rider (2000) TV movie, and apparently some new features too. In announcement news today, Shout! Studios has just unveiled their first two Hong Kong Cinema Classics releases for 4K Digital on 6/24, including John Woo’s Hard Boiled (1992) and Ringo Lam’s City on Fire (1987). They’ll be followed by Woo’s A Better Tomorrow trilogy (1986-89) in 4K Digital on 7/8, Tsui Hark’s Peking Opera Blues (1986) and Woo’s The Killer (1989) on 7/22, Tony Ching’s A Chinese Ghost Story trilogy (1987-91) on 8/5, and Woo’s Bullet in the Head (1990) on 8/19. Tim has shared his thoughts on Steve Miner’s Friday the 13th: Part II (1981) in 4K Ultra HD from the Paramount Scares: Volume 2 box set.

He’s also taken an in-depth look at Adam Marcus’ Jason Goes to Hell (1993) in 4K Ultra HD from New Line via Arrow Video.

In announcement news today, Madman Entertainment in Australia is releasing both Peter Faiman’s Crocodile Dundee: The Encore Cut (1986) and John Cornell’s Crocodile Dundee II (1988) in 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray on 7/9.

The company already has six recent 4K Ultra HD titles available, including Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai (1954), Sean Baker’s Anora (2024), Richard Kelly’s Donnie Darko: 20th Anniversary Edition (2001), Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance (2024), and Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite (2019).

A24’s online shop is now taking pre-orders on Isaiah Saxon’s The Legend of Ochi (2025) on Blu-ray. The title is expected to ship in July (street date TBA). [Read on here...]

Afternoon, everyone! We’ve got some great breaking news to report here at The Bits today, but first we’ve got more new disc reviews to share with you as always...

Dennis has taken a look at Stephen Frears’ The Grifters (1990) on Blu-ray from the Criterion Collection, as well as Bob Rafelson’s Mountains on the Moon (1990) on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics.

Stuart has offered his thoughts on Terence Young’s Bloodline (1979) on Blu-ray from Vinegar Syndrome, as well as Jean Aurel’s Les Femmes (1969) on Blu-ray from Kino Classics and StudioCanal.

Tim has reviewed Russ Meyer’s Supervixens (1975) in 4K Ultra HD from Severin Films.

And Stephen has given the complete In the Line of Duty I-IV Blu-ray box set a look from 88 Films.

I’ve also gotten my hands on Lionsgate’s new Quentin Tarantino Lionsgate Limited 4K Steelbooks, and I’ll have a review of each of them very soon, starting with Jackie Brown (1997) later today. To give you a tease, the new 4K presentations are terrific, particularly Jackie Brown which is a full 4K scan of original camera negative. But more on those soon.

Now then, as I noted a moment ago, we’ve got great breaking news to report today, starting with the fact that Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment has just made Miloš Forman’s Amadeus official for release in 4K Ultra HD on 2/25. [Read on here...]

My review of Ron Howard’s excellent Formula 1 racing drama Rush (2013) in 4K Ultra HD from Shout! Factory, featuring stunning HDR and a new Atmos mix on a 100 GB disc.

Stephen’s look at Michael Cimino’s Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (1974) as re-issued in a new Blu-ray edition by Kino Lorber Studio Classics—the same disc that was included with their excellent 4K release last year.

Stuart’s thoughts on Damiano Damiani’s A Man on His Knees (1979) on Blu-ray from Radiance Films and Steven Hilliard Stern’s Rolling Vengeance (1987) on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics.

And Dennis’ take on Norman Taurog’s Words and Music (1948) on Blu-ray from the MGM library via the Warner Archive Collection.

All right, we’ve got two new long-form disc reviews to share with you today...

The first is my look at Aaron Sorkin’s The West Wing: The Complete Series (1999-2006), which is finally available in a new 28-disc Blu-ray box set from Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment. The package is far from perfect, but for fans it’s still mostly be worth a look.

Also today, Stephen is celebrating yesterday’s 70th anniversary of Ishirō Honda’s original Godzilla (1954) by reviewing the new 4K Ultra HD release from Toho Studios via the Criterion Collection here in the US, a title that officially streets tomorrow.

In announcement news today, Kino Lorber Studio Classics has just revealed that John Frankenheimer’s Reindeer Games (2000) is coming soon to 4K Ultra HD. In addition, Melville Shavelson’s Houseboat (1958) is coming soon to Blu-ray Disc. [Read on here...]

This will include all 14 episodes with English Dolby Digital 5.1 audio, audio commentary on 3 episodes with puppeteers John Tartaglia and Karen Prell, a Blooper Reel, and 4 sing-a-longs. Tim’s review of the new Scooby-Doo! and the Witch’s Ghost (1999) and Scooby-Doo and the Alien Invaders (2000) on Blu-ray from the Warner Archive Collection.

And Stuart’s thoughts on Sidney Lanfield’s You’ll Never Get Rich (1941) on Region B only Blu-ray from Powerhouse Films’ Indicator label in the UK.

As for release news, there’s not a ton of it to report today, however we do have a couple of fun items for you...

First, Paramount has officially set the animated Transformers One for release on Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD on 12/17, with the Digital release expected tomorrow on 10/22. Extras will include 5 behind-the-scenes featurettes (including In the Beginning, World Building on Cybertron, Together As One, The Iacon 5000, and The Battle for Cybertron). You can see the cover artwork below the break.

Speaking of Paramount, they along with CBS have set Blue Bloods: The Final Season and Blue Bloods: The Complete Series for DVD only release on 12/17 as well. Extras on the final season will include deleted scenes, 2 featurettes (The Story of the Reagans and May the Road Rise Up to Greet You), and a gag reel. [Read on here...]
