We’ve got a quick release news update here at The Bits for you today. But first, more new disc reviews...

I’ve just given a pair of titles from Sony’s new Columbia Classics: Volume 2 box set a look in 4K Ultra HD, including Carol Reed’s Oliver! (1968) and Otto Preminger’s Anatomy of a Murder (1959). That last review includes film comments by our dear friend Barrie Maxwell, the late great Digital Bits classic film columnist.

Also, Tim has taken a look at Random Space Media’s recent Resident Evil: Six Movie Collection, which includes the first six films in that series in 4K Ultra HD. It’s very similar in content to Sony’s 2020 release and it’s an all-region Australian import.

And Stephen has reviewed Ari Aster’s Misdommar: Director’s Cut in 4K Ultra HD, which is only available directly from A24 via their online web shop.

All of these releases are well worth a look for cinema fans, so do check out the reviews.

Just to give you a sneak peek at what’s coming next review-wise, I’m going to continue working my way through Sony’s Columbia Classics: Volume 2 4K titles as well as the Universal Classic Monsters: Icons of Horror Collection in 4K. All of those reviews should be posted here at The Bits by mid next week. Tim’s also working on Legend on Blu-ray from Arrow, and Stephen and Dennis are working through a stack of new titles too. So stay tuned for lots more reviews in the week ahead and beyond. [Read on here...]

We also have a great new film retrospective coming from Michael Coate early next week, so be sure to watch for that as well. (You Indiana Jones fans should really enjoy it!)

In release news today, Lionsgate has officially announced their Best Buy-exclusive Terminator 2: Judgment Day 4K Ultra HD Steelbook release, which arrives on 11/23. It will include a new “55 minute T2 documentary featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger, James Cameron, Edward Furlong, and more.” Interestingly, the press release specifically notes that the release was “stunningly restored for modern viewers by Cameron himself.” But I have a suspicion that this is just marketing language detached from reality, and that this is the same lousy and DNR-scrubbed 4K master that came from StudioCanal for the previous Ultra HD release of this film. I have multiple inquiries into sources who will be able to confirm this one way or another, and as soon as I know 100% whether it’s actually a new remaster or the same 4K presentation as before, rest assured that I’ll post an update here on The Bits.

Now then, Lionsgate has also set Hacksaw Ridge for release on 4K Ultra HD at Best Buy on 11/2. The disc will include Dolby Atmos sound and the previous Blu-ray extras. There’s no mention of HDR, so assume it’s HDR10 only.

Disney and Searchlight Pictures have also set The Eyes of Tammy Faye for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 11/16, with the Digital release expected on 11/2. The only extra will be the A Look Inside The Eyes of Tammy Faye featurette.

Meanwhile, Screen Media has just released Naked Singularity on Blu-ray and DVD. The film stars John Boyega, Olivia Cooke, Bill Skarsgård, Ed Skrein, Linda Lavin, and Tim Blake Nelson.

For fans of Doctor Who, the BBC has just announced that Doctor Who: The Collection – Season 17 is coming to Blu-ray on December 13 in the UK. (The US street date is expected to be 12/14.) The season features the ever-popular Fourth Doctor, aka Tom Baker, and the set comes loaded with a host of great new special features that you can read about here on the official DoctorWho.TV website.

Also today, Kino Lorber Studio Classics has revealed that they’re releasing Tomas Alfredson’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011) on Ultra HD. Street date is listed as “coming soon.” This is not only a great film, it should look fantastic in 4K—it was shot on film and it has a native 4K Digital Intermediate.

Speaking of 4K, Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive (2011) has been set for release in 4K Ultra HD in Germany on December 10. We expect this to be a Sony title here the States, though a domestic street date is still TBA.

And Carlotta Films in France has announced a new 4K Ultra HD box set of François Truffaut’s The Adventures of Antoine Doinel (which would include The 400 Blows, Antonine and Colette, Stolen Kisses, Bed and Board, and Love on the Run), though do be aware that this set will almost certainly not include English subtitles. But it was a Criterion release here in the States, so maybe they’ll update it in UHD in the months ahead. You can see the French set here on Amazon.fr.

Back to Kino Lorber Studio Classics for a moment: The company has also revealed that they’re releasing Revenge of the Shogun Women (1977) on Blu-ray on 12/14, and the disc will include both Blu-ray 3D (polarized) and anaglyphic (red/cyan) 3-D versions in addition to the regular 2D presentation. The 3D has been remastered by our friend Bob Furmanek of the 3-D Film Archive. The package will also include a set of 3-D shorts and a pair of anaglyphic 3-D glasses! You can see the cover artwork below.

Finally today, Warner’s 4K Ultra HD release of Francis Ford Coppola’s The Outsiders: The Complete Novel (due on 11/9) is now available for pre-order on Amazon. So here’s a look at that, with its pre-order link (the other title links will be added when they become available)...

Revenge of the Shogun Women 3D (Blu-ray Disc) Doctor Who: Season 17 (Blu-ray Disc) The Outsiders: The Complete Novel (4K Ultra HD)

That’s all for today. Stay tuned!
