Today is Blu-ray review day here at The Bits...

First up, we have a couple of brand new reviews for you.  From our own Todd Doogan comes a look at Criterion’s excellent special edition of Brazil, lovingly upgraded for high-definition and so better than ever.  Don’t miss it!

Also, Tim has turned in his thoughts on Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man, which is a darned fine special edition release produced by our old friend Charles de Lauzirika.  And the movie’s not half bad too!

Plus, we’ve also upgraded a whopping ten previous Blu-ray reviews from The Original Bits into our new review database.  This includes Sony’s Ghostbusters, Dr. Strangelove: 45th Anniversary Special Edition and the Close Encounters of the Third Kind: 30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition, Warner’s Barry Lyndon, Heat, Contact and 2010: The Year We Make Contact, Universal’s Dune, DreamWorks’ Galaxy Quest and A&E’s Space: 1999 – Season 1.  Good stuff all.  We have many more classic Blu-ray reviews that we’re gradually upgrading into our review database, so be sure to check them all out and watch for lots more.  [Read on here…]

Here at the site today, Russell Hammond has posted the weekly Release Dates & Artwork update with all the latest Blu-ray, DVD and Video Game cover artwork and Amazon.com pre-order links.  As always, a portion of anything your order from Amazon in the same session after clicking through to them from our links goes to help support our work here at The Bits and we surely do appreciate it.

Speaking of which, Amazon.com is currently running a sale featuring 56% off select Blu-ray titles from The Criterion Collection, so be sure to click here and take advantage!

In announcement news today, Well Go USA has set IP Man: The Final Fight for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 11/12.

Funimation is re-issuing the classic anime Akira on Blu-ray Combo on 11/12 as a 25th Anniversary Edition (SRP $34.98).  The company also has the anime Wolf Children set for release on Blu-ray Combo on 11/26.

Image Entertainment has set a My Name is Nobody: 40th Anniversary Edition for 11/5 (SRP $24.98).

Shout! Factory has set Transformers Prime: Season Three – Beast Hunters for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 12/3.

Meanwhile, Scream Factory has set Saturn 3 for Blu-ray Combo release on 12/3, and they’ve just announced that they’re releasing the 1965 shocker Die, Monster, Die! on Blu-ray Combo early in 2014!  The film stars the legendary Boris Karloff.

Also today, we’ve heard back from Warner Home Video: They currently have no plans to release Richard Linklater’s Before Sunrise and Before Sunset on Blu-ray.  This despite the fact that Sony is releasing the third film in the series, Before Midnight, on BD on 10/22.  But I think we can change their minds on this, so be sure to let them know you want these titles on BD in any way you can.

Warner does, as it happens, have The Hangover Trilogy coming on Blu-ray on 12/3 (SRP $57.98) for what it’s worth.

And from the Paramount catalog, Warner is releasing Serpico on Blu-ray for the first time on 12/3 as well (SRP $19.98).

Here’s a look at the Blu-ray Disc cover artwork for Well Go USA’s IP Man: The Final Fight, Funimation’s Akira: 25th Anniversary Edition and Scream Factory’s Saturn 3 – all are now available for pre-order on Amazon by clicking on the covers...
