The good news is that it look like a terrific set. The 4K package is a SEVEN disc set which includes the Theatrical Cut in 4K, the Extended Cut in 4K, and the Argento Cut in 4K (each on their own Ultra HD discs), along with a Blu-ray full of special features (many of them new, as well as both cuts of the Document of the Dead documentary), and no less than THREE Audio CDs with the soundtrack and the complete De Wolfe sound effects library. You’ll also get a 150 page hardback book and a new Dawn of the Dead novelization by Romero and Susanna Sparrow. The film itself is mastered from a new 4K scan of the original camera negative for the Theatrical Cut, the color reversal internegative (for the Extended Cut material), and the interpositive (for the Argento Cut). And the OCN scan and color grade was supervised and approved by the film’s director of photography, Michael Gornick. So that’s the good news.
The BAD news is that while pre-orders are NOW OPEN, it’s not yet available on Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk, and Second Sight isn’t shipping to US addresses (presumably due to the pandemic). So if you want a copy here in the States, it appears that Zavvi is your own option. But at least Zavvi is an option. The street date is currently set at October 26th. Here’s a look at the packaging.
[Editor’s Note: It IS up for pre-order on Amazon.co.uk now, available at this link.]
I don’t think there’s any doubt whatsoever that this could be the ultimate home video version of the film.
All right, one last item today. Our sources are telling us that Universal will be bowing its first Alfred Hitchcock titles on the 4K Ultra HD format later this year (likely in August or September). Among the titles to expect in the first wave are Psycho, The Birds, Vertigo, and Rear Window. We’ve updated our 4K Ultra HD Release List here at The Bits accordingly.
That’s all for now. Stay tuned...
