Also, as many of you longtime Bits readers know, I’ve worked behind-the-scenes in this industry for years to see George P. Cosmatos’ Tombstone (1993) released in 4K Ultra HD, so I was thrilled when Disney finally announced it for release on 4/22. But there are still more catalog titles that I’ve been quietly advocating behind-the-scenes for, and I’m very pleased today to reveal that another of them is finally coming to 4K Ultra HD in the months ahead: Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon (1975)! I don’t have a street date yet, but my best guess is that we’ll see it in July or August. I’ll share more details when I can. And let’s hope that the last two Kubrick films not yet in 4K—Lolita (1962) and Eyes Wide Shut (1999)—will follow it sooner rather than later.
In other news this afternoon, don’t forget that Hayao Myiazaki’s Princess Mononoke is now playing in IMAX theaters in its new 4K restoration from Studio Ghibli via GKids. Be sure to catch it while you can! As we’ve said previously here at The Bits, we do expect a 4K disc release to follow in the months ahead (from GKids via Shout).
And finally today, just a reminder: Digital Bits readers can get a 15% discount off of great artwork and other items from the legendary concept artist Colin Cantwell’s online store at ColinCantwell.com. Colin, as you may know, was the original designer of many of the iconic spacecraft from the original Star Wars (1977), including the X-Wing, Y-Wing, Tie Fighter, and Star Destroyer. You may also recall that a “Cantwell-class” Star Destroyer appeared in the first season of Andor in his honor. There are prints, T-shirts, mugs, etc. Some of the proceeds will be donated to the TSJ Foundation that Colin and his partner Sierra have long been involved with in support of STEAM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) for kids, and the eventual production of a documentary about his work. Just use the code “BITS” when checking out for your 15% discount. It’s a great cause, not to mention a chance to buy a very cool piece of Star Wars history, and to support the preservation of a good man’s legacy!
Back tomorrow with more. Stay tuned...
