We’ve some interesting release news today, starting with a little heads-up: Sources say that the long-anticipated official announcement of Ridley Scott’s Alien on 4K Ultra HD is happening very soon. So be sure to watch for that. We’ll have all the details here as soon as they’re official.

In other 4K announcement news, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has made Ridley Scott’s Black Hawk Down official for release on the format on 5/7.

It will include both the Theatrical and Extended cuts of the film newly remastered in 4K from the original camera negative and featuring an HDR grade approved by Scott. Both will also feature a new Dolby Atmos sound mix. [Read on here...]

The 4K release will also include the Theatrical Blu-ray release of the film complete with all of the great extras produced by Charles de Lauzirika, among them three different audio commentary tracks with the filmmakers, The Essence of Combat: Making Black Hawk Down documentary, deleted and alternate scenes, a production design archive and much more. The official cover artwork is visible both above left and also below.

While we’re talking Sony, the studio is also releasing A Dog’s Way Home on Blu-ray and DVD on 4/9, with the Digital release expected on 3/26.

In other news today, Tempe Digital is releasing a new Blu-ray ultimate edition of J.R. Bookwalter’s Robot Ninja (1989) in late March, available exclusively via the Tempe online store until 4/1. We presume there will be a wide release later. Also available will be an MOD DVD version. Orders placed online will include a reversible 18x24-inch poster while supplies last.

Lionsgate has set Replicas, starring Keanu Reeves, for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 4/16, with the Digital release expected on 4/2. Extras will include audio commentary (with director Jeffrey Nachmanoff and executive producer James Dodson), the Imprint Complete: The Making of Replicas featurette, and deleted scenes.

HBO is releasing Camping and Jane Fonda in Five Acts on DVD on 3/26. They also have Swiped coming to Digital on 3/11, followed by OG, 2 Dope Queens: Season 2, and Jane Fonda in Five Acts on Digital on 3/25.

And here at The Bits today, our own Michael Coate celebrates the 10th anniversary of Fanboys in a new History, Legacy & Showmanship roundtable with film experts Zaki Hasan, Michael Kaminski, and Bill Watters. It’s definitely worth a look.

Tim has also posted two new Blu-ray reviews, looking at Lew Landers’ The Return of the Vampire (1943) from Shout! Factory and John Badham’s Dracula (1979) from Universal. Enjoy!
