Criterion’s May includes Umbrellas of Cherbourg & The Three Musketeers in 4K, plus Imprint’s Stir of Echoes 4K, A Complete Unknown, Flight Risk, Venom (1981) & more!

We’re rounding out the week today here at The Bits with three more new disc reviews, including...

Stephen’s look at David Fincher’s The Social Network (2010), as newly upgraded to stand-alone 4K UHD Steelbook with Dolby Vision HDR by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

And Stuart’s thoughts on Brunello Rondi’s Riot in a Woman’s Prison (1974) on Blu-ray from Raro Video via Kino Lorber, as well as Maurice Cloche’s Monsieur Vincent (1947) on Blu-ray from StudioCanal and Kino Classics.

In terms of announcement news, the big item today is that our friends at The Criterion Collection have just revealed their May slate of Blu-ray and 4K titles, which is set to include Norman Jewison’s In the Heat of the Night (1967) (Spine #959 – 4K UHD + Blu-ray) and Jacques Demy’s The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) (Spine #716 – 4K UHD + Blu-ray) on 5/6, Abbas Kiarostami’s The Wind Will Carry Us (1999) (Spine #1261 – Blu-ray) on 5/13, Bruce Robinson’s Withnail and I (1987) (Spine #119 – 4K UHD + Blu-ray) and How to Get Ahead in Advertising (1989) (Spine #120 – Blu-ray) on 5/20, and a double feature of Richard Lester’s The Three Musketeers (1973) and The Four Musketeers (1974) (Spine #1263 – 4K UHD + Blu-ray and Blu-ray), as well as Charles Burnett’s Killer of Sheep (1978) (Spine #1262 – 4K UHD + Blu-ray and Blu-ray) on 5/27. Criterion's May 2025 slate

Also today, Lionsgate has set Mel Gibson’s Flight Risk (2005) for Digital release today, with the physical Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K UHD release yet to be officially announced. But extras will include the Risk Management: Making Flight Risk featurette and a theatrical trailer.

Searchlight Pictures and Disney have now officially set James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown (2024) for release on Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD on 4/1, with the Digital release due 2/25. Look for the 4K to include HDR10 high dynamic range and Dolby Atmos audio on a 66 GB disc. Extras will include the 4-part The Making of A Complete Unknown documentary (featuring The Story, Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan, The Supporting Cast, and The Design), and audio commentary with the director.

Imprint has announced a deluxe “hardbox” 4K Ultra HD edition of David Koepp’s Stir of Echoes (1999) starring Kevin Bacon for release on 4/30. The 4K disc will include Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos audio. Both the Blu-ray and 4K discs will include audio commentary with writer/director David Koepp, 10 new and legacy interview featurettes (including Visions of the Past: Making Stir of Echoes with David Koepp, Establishing Shot with Fred Murphy and David Koepp, Flipping the Switch: Directing Stir of Echoes with David Koepp, Maggie’s Memories: Inside Stir of Echoes with Kathryn Erbe, Opening the Door: Designing Stir of Echoes with Nelson Coates, Sights of Spirits: Channeling the Paranormal, Behind the Echoes, The Mind’s Eye: Beneath the Trance, Special Effects, and Production Design), interviews with cast and crew, scene comparisons, screen tests, deleted scenes, the trailer, TV spots, promos, and the Breathe music video. You can pre-order it here...

Stir of Echoes (Imprint 4K UHD)

Imprint has also announced the April release of Jack Arnold’s It Came From Outer Space (1953) on 4K UHD + Blu-ray, as well as a double feature of Julien Duvivier’s Flesh and Fantasy (1943) and the anthology film Dead of Night (1945), the Tales of Adventure: Collection 5—including The 27th Day (1957), The Night the World Exploded (1957), This Island Earth (1955), Devil Girl from Mars (1954), The Gamma People (1956), and The Underwater City (1962)—the Tales of Adventure: Collection 6—including Counter-Attack (1945), Abandon Ship! (1957), King Rat (1965), and The Bridge at Remagen (1969)—Mitchell Leisen’s Bride of Vengeance (1949), and Sam Wood’s Ivy (1947), all on Blu-ray and many for the first time.

Blue Underground is releasing a new 4K restoration of Piers Haggard’s British horror-thriller Venom (1981) on 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray on 3/25. Extras will include “an archival audio commentary with film historians Troy Howarth, Nathaniel Thompson and Eugenio Ercolani; new video interviews with editor/second unit director Michael Bradsell, makeup artist Nick Dudman, author and critic Kim Newman, and The Dark Side’s Allan Bryce; trailers; TV spots; and a still gallery. First Pressing includes embossed slipcover and collectible booklet with essay by Michael Gingold.”

And finally, Well Go USA has set Hyun Moon-seop’s Devil’s Stay (2024) for Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital release on 3/18.
