All right, we’ve had a big week here at The Bits. As you can probably tell, I’ve spent most of the week checking in with studio and industry sources, which led to yesterday’s scoop on Tombstone coming to 4K Ultra HD next month. And trust me when I tell you that there’s a lot more great 4K catalog news to come in the months ahead. Given that we’ve been a part of—and reporting on—the home entertainment industry for more than twenty-eight years, I can confidently promise you that we have the best sources in this industry period. We’ve got a few interesting pieces of announcement news for you today...

First, Paramount has revealed new 4K Ultra HD Steelbook editions of the Mission: Impossible films today. Look for Mission: Impossible and Mission: Impossible 2 on 6/27, followed by Mission: Impossible 3 and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol on 7/4, and finally Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation and Mission: Impossible – Fallout on 7/11. You can see the Steelbook artwork for each below the break.

Paramount is also releasing an Amaray/wide-release version of Young Sherlock Holmes on Blu-ray on 6/27 (for those of you who passed on the Blu-ray Steelbook release).

Some of you will recall that we recently mentioned that Mill Creek is releasing The Event: The Complete Series on Blu-ray on 6/6. Well, Universal is also releasing La Brea: The Complete Second Season on Blu-ray that same day.

Allied Vaughn has set Ben Steinbauer and Berndt Mader’s comedy documentary Chop & Steele for Blu-ray and DVD on 7/18.

The BBC is releasing Doctor Who: Jon Pertwee – Complete Season Three on Blu-ray on 7/11. [Read on here...]

As I mentioned at the end of today’s early My Two Cents update here at The Bits, I wanted to take a few moments this afternoon to talk about Star Trek: Picard – Season Three.

I had the good fortunate and great pleasure of attending Paramount’s official premiere screening event (last Thursday evening) for the new season at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. Nearly the entire cast of the series was on hand, along with many crew members, Star Trek luminaries, and frankly scores of industry-insider Trekkies, many of whom I’m known for twenty-five years. At this event—following in-person introductions by Patrick Stewart, series co-creator Alex Kurtzman, and Season Three showrunner Terry Matalas—the first two episodes of the new season were shown to an overwhelmingly positive reaction. This was followed by an off-the-hook after party at the Roosevelt Hotel, where everyone got well-lubed while discussing what they’d just seen.

My original plan, after taking in all of this, was to come back here on The Bits the following morning to tell you all about it. But the experience of seeing those two episodes on the big screen was frankly kind of overwhelming. And I really needed to process what I’d seen for a bit first. Then, I was offered press access to screen more episodes and naturally I dropped everything to do just that. So not only have I now seen six of the season’s ten episodes, I have a much better handle on the quality of this new season, and what it means for Star Trek fans. [Read on here...]

Well! Only a few days after sharing your first look at the cover artwork for Paramount’s forthcoming 4K Ultra HD releases of the Star Trek: The Next Generation feature films, we’ve got another piece of Star Trek 4K news to share with you, but this time on the TV front…

Paramount has just officially set Star Trek: Strange New Worlds – Season One for 4K Ultra HD Steelbook release on 5/16!

Keep in mind, Season One of the series is already set to street on Blu-ray and DVD on 3/21. That Blu-ray release is expected to include over 90 minutes of special features.

Among them will be a trio of documentary featurettes (Pike’s Peak, World Building, and Exploring New Worlds), audio commentary on the pilot episode by Anson Mount and Akiva Goldsman, deleted scenes, and a gag reel. [Read on here...]

We’ve got two more new disc reviews for you today here at The Bits...

Stephen has taken a look at The Films of Doris Wishman: The Twilight Years on Blu-ray from AGFA, Something Weird, and Vinegar Syndrome, a three-disc set that includes seven exploitation films that Wishman directed between 1970 and 1977.

And Dennis has turned in his thoughts on Gordon Hessler’s The Oblong Box (1969), an American International Pictures film on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics.

As for today’s release news, let’s start with the big announcement up front: Lionsgate has just officially set Russell Mulcahy’s Highlander: Director’s Cut (1986) for release on 4K Ultra HD on 12/13, just as we expected.

Based on a new restoration done by StudioCanal, the disc will feature Dolby Vision HDR and HDR10 high dynamic range, along with 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio surround sound.

Two versions will be available, a wide release 4K in Amaray packaging and a Best Buy-exclusive Steelbook. Each will include the film on Ultra HD and Blu-ray, along with a selection of four art cards. [Read on here...]

Tim has posted his thoughts on Walter Hill’s 48 Hours (1982) from Paramount and Paul Donovan and Maura O’Connell’s Siege (1983) from Severin Films, both on Blu-ray, as well as Genndy Tartakovsky’s Hotel Transylvania 3 (2018) on Blu-ray 3D from Random Space Media.

Also, Dennis has checked out Danton Trumbo’s Johnny’s Got His Gun (1971) on Blu-ray from Imprint Films.

And Stephen has reviewed Erie C. Kenton’s You’re Telling Me! (1934) from Kino Lorber Studio Classics and Miklos Jancso’s Round-Up (1966) and The Red and the White (1967) from Kino Lorber, both on Blu-ray.

All right, we’ve got some great new disc reviews for you today, along with some terrific announcement news as well. But first, as always, those reviews...

I’ve just posted my in-depth look at Francis Ford Coppola’s legendary The Godfather Trilogy in 4K Ultra HD from Paramount. And let me tell you, the image restoration is breathtaking—as good as the 2008 Blu-rays were, this is almost a night and day difference. It’s really something. Best of all, the set includes all three films, including Coda (and two alternate versions of Part III as well), not to mention a wealth of new and legacy special features. There’s even restored mono audio on The Godfather and The Godfather Part II. This may very well be the 4K release of the year, so don’t miss it.

Also today, I’ve taken a look at Volume 3 and Volume 4 of ClassicFix’s 2K restorations of The Little Rascals shorts on Blu-ray. It appears that there will be 7 volumes total to release all 80 of the classic Hal Roach sound shorts, and Volume 5 is already slated for release on 4/5.

Stephen has taken a look at Robert Altman’s Nashville, as newly released on Blu-ray by Paramount as part of their Paramount Presents line. From Stephen’s review, it sounds like the title is pretty good.

And Tim has reviewed the animated Batman: The Long Halloween – Part One and Part Two on Blu-ray Disc. Part One came out in June from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and DC, while Part Two just came out last month. Both are apparently well worth a look.

All right, we’ve got a few odds and ends to report on for you today...

First up, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment will be releasing a new Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone: Anniversary 8-Film Collector’s Edition on 11/2, featuring all 8 films in the series in both 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray, packaged in a cardboard replica of the Hogwarts Express (SRP $139.99). The box will also include a replica train ticket and a photo book featuring a look at props and other items from the films. You can see the open packaging below the break. Before you get too excited, these are the exact same discs released previously. But if you’re a fan and you haven’t yet upgraded to 4K, this might be just the thing.

Also in 4K Ultra HD news today, we’ve learned that Koch Media in Germany has delayed their wide release of David Lynch’s Dune on Blu-ray and 4K (as well as their web store exclusive Dune: Ultimate Edition 4K/Blu-ray set) to 10/14. (It was previously set to street on 8/26). The reason is that this will now be the only place you’ll be able to see Ballyhoo Motion Pictures’ feature-length documentary The Sleeper Must Awaken: Making Dune. As we’ve reported previously, the Arrow Video 4K and Blu-ray release will street on 8/31 as originally planned, but it will no longer include the documentary. Adjust your plans accordingly.
