Let’s get right down to business to start the new week…
First up, we’ve got a trio of new disc reviews for you to check out. I’ve offered my thoughts on Sony’s new A Few Good Men: 25th Anniversary Edition on 4K Ultra HD, which is one of the best film-based catalog titles I’ve seen yet on the format in terms of A/V quality. I’ve also posted a review of Netflix’s Target-exclusive Stranger Things: Season 1 on Ultra HD, which is native 4K but has no HDR and only lossy audio – a real disappointment, all things considered. Meanwhile, Tim has posted his review of Shout! Factory’s new Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume XXXIX box set on DVD. All right, we’ve got a few things for you today...
First, our own Michael Coate posted a great new History, Legacy & Showmanship retrospective last night celebrating Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind on the occasion of the film’s 40th anniversary. Michael’s column looks back at the film’s initial theatrical run and features another great roundtable discussion of film historians. It’s a good read, so be sure to give it a look.
Now then... a quick commentary. Almost every day, I get asked this question in some form via email or social media: “Why no 3D?” As in: My favorite film was available in 3D in the theater, but how come the studio didn’t release it on Blu-ray 3D for the home? [Read on here…]

Our friends at The Criterion Collection have just announced their February 2018 Blu-ray and DVD slate, which is set to include an update of Louis Malle’s Elevator to the Gallows (Spine #35 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 2/6, an update of Jonathan Demme’s The Silence of the Lambs (Spine #13 – Blu-ray and DVD – from a new 4K scan) and George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead (Spine #910 – Blu-ray and DVD – from a new 4K scan) on 2/13, Satyajit Ray’s The Hero (Spine #911 – Blu-ray and DVD) and Kon Ichikawa’s An Actor’s Revenge (Spine #912 – Blu-ray and DVD – from a new 4K scan) on 2/20, and finally Tony Richardson’s Tom Jones (Spine #909 – Blu-ray and DVD – from a new 4K scan) on 2/17. First things first today...
We’ve just posted four new disc reviews, including my thoughts on Fox’s Firefly: The Complete Series – 15th Anniversary Collector’s Edition on Blu-ray and Universal’s Serenity in 4K Ultra HD. Tim has also posted a new review of Arrow Video’s George A. Romero: Between Night and Dawn Blu-ray box set. And Jim Hemphill has turned in his thoughts on Criminal Minds: Season 12 on DVD from CBS and Paramount. Do give them a look and, as always, more reviews are coming. [Read on here…]
Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has just officially set IT for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 1/9/2018 (SRP $35.99, $28.98, and $44.95, respectively). The Digital HD release is expected on 12/19. These SKUs will all include the theatrical version of the film. (Note that a Director’s Cut is rumored for release at a later date in 2018, but that is not yet confirmed.) The film is based on the book by Stephen King and is directed by Andy Muschietti. The Blu-ray versions will include deleted scenes and 3 featurettes (Pennywise Lives!, The Losers’ Club, and Author of Fear). Both will include Dolby Atmos audio and the 4K disc will include Dolby Vision HDR. [Read on here…]
