All right, as most of you know by now, tonight marks the opening of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in theaters. My wife, brother, and I are joining our old friend Robert Meyer Burnett and his family for the first showing at the Chinese Theater in Hollywood, where it all began back in 1977. And having just seen a press screening of the film on Tuesday, we’re very much looking forward to seeing it again in IMAX Laser projection. The upshot is that today’s post is going to be a brief one.

However… we DO have a little more detail for you about the recently revealed Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga 4K/Blu-ray box set that’s now known to be coming on 3/31/2020.

Not only will it include all 9 of the “Skywalker” films on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Disc, each film will include a bonus disc of extras (for a total of 27 discs). It’s reasonable to assume that virtually everything that’s ever been released previously for each of these films in terms of special features is fair game for inclusion on these bonus discs and it’s possible there may be new features too. But of course we won’t know for sure until this set is officially announced. [Read on here...]

One thing is likely however: This set will probably NOT include the original unaltered versions of the classic films. Director JJ Abrams was recently interviewed during the press junkets for the new film and revealed that he attempted to get Lucasfilm to release them but they declined. Disney could have a handshake deal with George Lucas not to do so. It is, at least, good to know that Abrams tried to get it to happen.

In any case, we know that Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga in deluxe packaging is going to be a Best Buy exclusive release—that’s the packaging we showed you yesterday. We also now know that there will be a wide release of The Skywalker Saga on Blu-ray and DVD (18 discs each) in the UK based on Amazon.co.uk and Zavvi retail leaks.

What we don’t know yet is: Will there be a regular 4K/Blu-ray box set version in wide release in the US, or will Best Buy have the box set exclusively and all the films will be available as 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray singles, as was the case with the MCU Infinity Saga titles.

If I had to guess though, my guess would be that there will be exclusive and wide release versions of the box set, just with different packaging, and that the films will be available as singles too. And I would be very surprised if the bonus discs are exclusive to the box set. But again, we won’t know until either the studio officially announces the release, or retailers here in the States begin to leak more details.

In any case, that cover artwork you see above left has been floating around on social media, so it could be legit. I’ve included it here just because, but be aware that it may or may not be the final cover artwork for a wide release version of the set. [Editor’s Note: It’s come to our attention that the cover art above is likely fake. But we did caution that it was floating around social media and probably wasn’t the final art. The packaging image posted yesterday is definitely authentic, as it comes from Best But directly. Just so you know.]

Now then… we hope each and every one of you who still appreciates Star Wars is able to see the new film spoiler free soon and we certainly hope you enjoy it! As I said on Tuesday, my brother and I had a great time with it. Keep your expectations reasonable and don’t expect Lawrence of Arabia, but my personal take is that this is the best conclusion to the Star Wars Saga we could expect given the previous sequels. I do actually think this film is better because of the choices made by Rian Johnson in The Last Jedi before it, whatever people think of that film. And John Williams has outdone himself with the score. So have a good time and enjoy!

We’ll be back here tomorrow with a more normal news post and we’ll have that Empire Strikes Back Disney+ comparison gallery we promised you this week too.

Stay tuned…!
