Today’s update here at The Bits is going to be quick one, as we’re working on a bunch of big new Blu-ray reviews that we’re trying to get posted over the next week or so.

Speaking of which, I’ve posted my thoughts on James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy, as newly released on Blu-ray 3D this week from Disney. It’s a fun film – much better than it really has any right to be – so I’d definitely recommend that you all give it a look. Check my review for all the details.  [Read on here…]

By the way, if you live here in the L.A. area, Gunn is going to be signing copies of Guardians on Blu-ray up at Amoeba Music in Hollywood tomorrow night (12/12 – see this link for details). The fun starts at 5 PM and runs until 7. Disney’s press release says the first 200 people to purchase their copies at Amoeba during the event will get them signed, so we can’t be sure that everyone will get their discs signed. But James Gunn is definitely going to be on hand there so give it a shot. Amoeba is located at 6400 Sunset Blvd, Los Angeles, between the CNN building and the Arclight.

Also here at The Bits today, we’ve posted Todd’s new Doogan’s Queue column featuring his thoughts on this week’s new Blu-ray and DVD releases, as well as his favorite Christmas films.

We’ve also posted Russell Hammond’s weekly update of the Release Dates & Artwork section here at The Bits too, featuring all the latest Blu-ray and DVD cover artwork and Amazon.com pre-order links. As always, whenever you order something through Amazon after clicking through to them from our links, you’re helping to support our work here at The Bits and we really do appreciate it. It make a big difference in being able to keep the site going. So thank you!

In announcement news today, Warner Home Video is getting ready to release Mortal Kombat: Conquest – The Complete Series on DVD only on 3/31. All 22 episodes will be included on 4 discs (SRP $39.98).

Better still is word that Warner is working to bring Sharky’s Machine to Blu-ray on 4/7.

Meanwhile, our friends at the Warner Archive collection have just released some great titles on MOD DVD, including Running on Empty (1988), The Black Scorpion, The Man with Two Brains, My Blue Heaven, Joe’s Apartment, Divine Madness: A National Treasure Chest, The Swarm, and The Narrow Margin (1952) among others! Note that The Man with Two Brains, Joe’s Apartment, The Black Scorpion, and My Blue Heaven are in widescreen here for the first time.

In other news, Lionsgate will release the horror film Jessabelle on Blu-ray, DVD and digital on 1/13.

Universal will release Mobsters and Jesus Christ Superstar (the filmed stage version) for Blu-ray release on 3/3/.

RLJ and Image Entertainment have set The Houses October Built for Blu-ray and DVD release on 1/6.

Inception Media Group has set Viktor, starring Gérard Depardieu and Elizabeth Hurley, for DVD release on 1/13.

And Film Movement’s new Omnibus Entertainment division will release Karen Gillan’s Not Another Happy Ending on DVD on 1/6.

Finally, PBS Distribution has set NOVA: Why Planes Vanish for DVD only release on 12/23.

Here’s a look at some more new and interesting cover artwork, with Amazon.com pre-order links...

The Drop (Blu-ray Disc)    Life Itself (Blu-ray Disc)    Ouija (Blu-ray Disc)

The Mule (Blu-ray Disc)    Richard Pryor: Omit the Logic (Blu-ray Disc)    Force Majure (Blu-ray Disc)

All right, I may check back in later today with another review, and we should have at least a few more over the next couple days. CBS’ Star Trek: The Next Generation – Season 7 is definitely on the list.

Stay tuned...
