We’ve got a couple of interesting pieces of announcement news to report today, and then I have some thoughts on the recent news about Blu-ray 4K. So let’s get to it. First up, the announcement news…

Lionsgate has just set A Most Wanted Man for Blu-ray and DVD release on 11/4 (SRP $29.99 and $26.98), with a digital release on 10/28. Extras will include a pair of featurettes (The Making of A Most Wanted Man and Spymaster: John le Carré in Hamburg).  [Read on here…]

All right, let’s finish the week with a little more fun release news…

First up today, Sony Picture Home Entertainment has announced the release of a Mr. Smith Goes to Washington: 75th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray on 12/2. The film has been digitally restored and remastered in 4K and will be presented in 1080p on this release. The set includes audio commentary with Frank Capra Jr., the Frank Capra’s American Dream feature-length documentary, 5 featurettes (Frank Capra Jr. Remembers... Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Conversations with Frank Capra Jr.: A Family History, Conversations with Frank Capra Jr.: The Golden Years, Frank Capra: Collaboration, and The Frank Capra I Knew), the film’s original theatrical trailer, and a rare international trailer. Sorry to hit you guys a little late this week. I blew out my ankle right before a long holiday weekend and wasn’t able to see a doctor until yesterday. Immobility sucks. Unending pain sucks. Getting old sucks. But because I’m the cool older cousin you all deserve, I wanted to chime in in-between bouts of sobriety and numbness while I could. It’s going to be a short one, but it’s something.

Extras on both discs versions will include director’s commentary and the Illuminating Evil: Making Deliver Us from Evil featurette. We’re closing out the week with a couple new bits of announcement news and an update on a title we’ve mentioned a couple times before.

First, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has set How to Train Your Dragon 2 for Blu-ray Combo and DVD release on 11/11, with a Digital HD release set for 10/21. The Blu-ray Combo will include will include the all-new Dragons: Dawn of the Dragon Racers animated adventure, along with audio commentary by Simon Otto, Bonnie Arnold, Dean DeBlois, and Pierre-Olivier Vincent, deleted scenes, 5 featurettes (Where No One Goes: The Making of How to Train Your Dragon 2, Fishleg’s Dragon Stats, Drago’s War Machines, Berk’s Dragon World, and Hiccup’s Inventions in Flight), the Dragon Races experience play-by-play commentary, an image gallery, the usual World of DreamWorks Animation music videos, and the theatrical trailer.  [Read on here…]

Anchor Bay and Starz have finally officially announced the Blu-ray and DVD release of Bong Joon Ho’s  science fiction/actioner Snowpiercer on 10/21 (SRP $29.99 and $24.98). The film stars Chris Evans, Song Kang Ho, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell, Octavia Spencer, Ewen Bremner, John Hurt, and Ed Harris. We’ve seen it here at The Bits; it’s pretty terrific. Both versions will include the director’s proper 126-minute cut, a critics commentary, and a bonus disc that adds 5 featurettes (The Birth of Snowpiercer, The Characters, Chris Evans & Tilda Swinton on Snowpiercer, The Train Brought to Life: Behind the Scenes of a Special Screening, and Transperceneige: From the Blank Page to the Black Screen), an animated prologue, and concept art galleries. [Read on here…]
