All right, we’re closing out the week here at The Bits with my review of Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams, which is about to be released on Blu-ray Disc by Criterion. Look for it in stores next Tuesday. Let me tell you... it’s well worth your time and money. The film has quite simply never looked this good before and the Criterion team has once again assembled a wonderful batch of special features for Kurosawa fans. Don’t miss it. [Read on here…]

Phantasm: Remastered & Ravager on 12/6, a look back at Howard the Duck & Happy Halloween!
Today is just a quick post given the Halloween holiday we all know and love. But, we do have a couple things for you today...
First up, our own Tim Salmons has turned in a review of Epic Picture’s Tales of Halloween anthology on Blu-ray! Sounds like it’s pretty terrific, so do check it out.
Also today, Michael Coate has turned in another new History, Legacy & Showmanship column here at The Bits, and this is a fun one: He’s looking back in celebration of Willard Huyck’s Howard the Duck on its 30th Anniversary! The column features release details and trivia, as well as a listing of first-run theaters, and even a roundtable discussion with film historians Caseen Gaines, Scott Mendelson, and John Wilson. Don’t miss it! [Read on here…]

Snowden, Hitchcock/Truffaut, Lifeboat, Ben-Hur (2016), Kino & Takashi Miike’s Black Society Trilogy
We’ve got another trio of disc reviews for you today, including my take on Sony’s Ghostbusters (2016) on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format and Shout! Factory’s new Nighthawks: Collector’s Edition (1981) on Blu-ray, which is one of the company’s new Shout Select titles. Whatever else you think of the Ghostbusters remake, Sony has included Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D, and Digital HD versions in the same package with the 4K without increasing the price - I wish more studios would do this. And fans of Nighthawks will be pleased to learn that the film’s soundtrack has been restored to include both The Rolling Stone’s Brown Sugar and Keith Emerson’s I’m a Man during the club scene. Meanwhile, Tim Salmons has also reviewed Entertainment One’s WNUF Halloween Special on good old DVD. Don’t miss them. [Read on here…]

Tim has also updated his recent review of Scream Factory’s The Thing: Collector’s Edition on Blu-ray to reflect the updated audio track found on all final product copies now in stores. The track is fixed and sounds great. [Read on here…]

Warner’s Bat v Supe: UCE big box, plus new Kino, McQuarrie/Star Wars book deal & animated Indy!
Well... based on an overwhelmingly positive reaction to my look at art books on 2001: A Space Odyssey last night, it seems like you guys enjoy it when we roam a bit off in the wilderness here at The Bits, thematically speaking. So I think we’ll try and do it a little more often in the weeks and months ahead. It’s certainly fun and it definitely keeps things interesting. Thanks for all the kind words, and I’ve very glad you liked the article. [Read on here…]

Savoring Great Film Scores, Catching Up on Classic Blu-rays & George Hamilton
I think it’s time we caught up. Walking outside during this Oklahoma summer is like tasting something after it’s been in the microwave about eight minutes. The heat and stupidity started even before Memorial Day and has not abated. It’s like we’re living on Mars – I’ve been pricing those spacesuits which protected Matt Damon.
But thank goodness for the movies. Especially the kind one watches in the comfort of one’s own home. Let’s discuss.
Here’s a serious complaint – as I learned over the years, watching a great film is a multi-sensory experience – you see, you listen, you emote. And for me, always a major component of that experience is the music score. For those who pay attention, music is usually the heart of the movie – name a classic up through about 1990 or so for which you can’t hum a main theme. Or name a dud or two with a score that is better than the picture. [Read on here...]
Warcraft official for BD, BD3D & 4K on 9/27, plus Everest 4K, Bates Motel: S4, Arrow’s Dark Water & more

The big announcement news today is that Universal Studios Home Entertainment has just officially set the Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of Warcraft for 9/27, with the Digital HD release expected on 9/13. [Read on here…]

The Abyss coming in 2017 at last, plus Aliens: 30th, Star Trek Beyond, Steven King’s It, new Scream & more!
We’re kicking things off this week with an early morning Monday post to deliver all of the breaking Blu-ray news out of Comic-Con in San Diego this past weekend.
First though, our own Tim Salmons has begun a new week of Pick-Ups reviews with a look at Synapse Films’ new Just Desserts: The Making of Creepshow – Special Edition Blu-ray, which arrived in stored on 7/12. It sounds like an outstanding documentary look behind the scenes on the making of the film, with a ton of great extras, so do give it a look. [Read on here…]
