New Kino/Scream titles, Space Between Us, A Monster Calls, Speed Racer & our Arrival 4K review
All right, the tweaking continues today on the upgraded Digital Bits site backend, but we’ve got a new review for you regardless. I’ve taken a look at Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format from Paramount. The film is a new classic of cinematic science fiction. It’s certainly well worth a look, so please enjoy the review.
In announcement news today, we’ve confirmed that Universal’s A Monster Calls is now officially set for Blu-ray and DVD release on 3/28, though no 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray version seems to be planned. Extras on the Blu-ray will include 2 featurettes (The Making of A Monster Calls and Making of the Tales), English audio commentary with writer Patrick Ness and Spanish audio commentary with director J.A. Bayona. [Read on here…]

Birth of a Nation, Mars, John Wick 4K, Dirk Gently, Captain Marvel & unlocking The Roddenberry Vault
We have just a quick update for you this afternoon, as I’ve been working hard to get a number of important Blu-ray and 4K titles reviewed this week. As such, I’ve just finished my in-depth look at the wonders of CBS’ new Star Trek: The Original Series – The Roddenberry Vault on Blu-ray, which streets next week (12/13). I’ve also found Lionsgate’s recent Hell or High Water well worth your time on Blu-ray, as it’s one of the best films of 2016. Be sure to give both of them a look.
The big announcement news today is that 20th Century Fox has officially set The Birth of a Nation for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray on 1/10. Extras on the Blu-ray will include audio commentary by director Nate Parker, deleted scenes with optional commentary (also included on the 4K), the #AmeriCAN short film with optional commentary, the Rise Up: The Legacy of Nat Turner documentary, 4 featurettes (The Birth of a Nation: The Making of a Movement, “Free God” Spoken Word, Celebration of Independent Voices: Nate Parker, and Shooting Script), and an image gallery. Penny Dreadful: Complete Series, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Creepshow 2, RoboCop 2-3 & more
First up this afternoon, we have a trio of new disc reviews. I’ve given Sony’s The Da Vinci Code a look on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format and Tim has turned in a new Scream for a Week column with reviews of Jack’s Back and the Black Christmas: Collector’s Edition on Blu-ray Disc. All of them are worth your consideration, especially for fans of the films in question.
Also, our own Russell Hammond has posted the weekly Release Dates & Artwork update with all the latest Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray cover artwork and Amazon.com pre-order links. As always, anytime you order literally anything from Amazon in the same session after you click to them through one of our links, you’re not only getting a good deal but you’re helping to support our work here at The Bits and we greatly appreciate it. Star Trek Beyond now looks set for 11/1, plus Better Call Saul: Season 2, new Vestron & Twilight's October slate
Afternoon, folks. Hope you had a fine weekend. I’m been busy working on new Blu-ray and 4K reviews, the first of which I’m pleased to offer you now...
Here are my thoughts on Universal’s new Frankenstein: Complete Legacy Collection and The Wolf Man: Complete Legacy Collection, which streeted last week and are now available. Both are good upgrades of the previous DVD box sets of the same name, but the value proposition for each is a little complicated. I should note that in order to review these sets, I had to purchase them at my own expense. Universal chose not to make them available for review. Meanwhile, I’m working on additional reviews for posting later and tomorrow, so stay tuned for those. [Read on here…]

Man Who Fell to Earth: 40th Blu-rays on the way, plus new Kino Lorber, a review of Batman v Superman 4K & more
Okay, there isn’t a ton of release news to report early this week, so we’re going to be focusing mostly on review work...
As such, I’ve just posted my thoughts on Warner’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – Ultimate Edition on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format. It’s a complicated film to discuss, and one that’s neither as bad nor as good as the most ardent critics would have you believe. But at least it’s a better experience than the theatrical cut. Do check it out. I’ve taken a look at Shout! Factory’s new Humpback Whales on 4K as well. And yesterday, in case you missed them, we posted regular Blu-ray reviews of Bite from Shout! Factory via our own Tim Salmons, as well as Diary of a Lost Girl (1929) from Kino Lorber Studio Classics via Jim Hemphill. Enjoy. [Read on here…]

X-Men: First Class 4K, Bourne, new Prince BDs, Alice Through the Looking Glass, To Live & Die in L.A. & more
We’re kicking things off today with a great new View from the Cheap Seats column from our own Bud Elder in which he muses over classic film scores, catches up on some of the recent deep catalog releases coming out on Blu-ray from the indie distributors, and has a few things to say about a fella named George Hamilton too. Do check it out!
Also available today is a new Blu-ray review from Jim Hemphill, none other than Fernando Leon de Aranoa’s A Perfect Day (2015), now available on disc from IFC Films and MPI Media Group.
Now then, in announcement news this afternoon… [Read on here…]
