First up today, we have no less than three new disc reviews for you, starting with Tim’s thoughts on Fangs of the Living Dead from Scream Factory as well as The Hospital and Harry and Walter Go to New York from Twilight Time.

All right, first up today we have two more Blu-ray reviews from Tim for you, including his thoughts on Warner Archive’s Doc Hollywood and also Dragonwyck from Twilight Time. Both are worth a look. And a little later today I’ll be back with my review of Sony’s The Dark Crystal on 4K Ultra HD (I’ll add the link here when it’s up).

Now then, the BIG news this afternoon (weren’t we just talking about this yesterday?) is that Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has now officially announced the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of the Wachowskis’ 1999 sci-fi/cyberpunk classic The Matrix on 5/22 (SRP $41.99). The 4K release has been produced from a new 4K scan of the original camera negative, a remaster supervised by the film’s director of photography, Bill Pope. The resulting image has been given HDR color grades in both HDR10 and Dolby Vision, both of which will be featured on this 4K UHD release. Furthermore, the 4K release will feature Dolby Atmos object-based audio. The actual 4K disc will also include a written introduction by the Wachowskis, along with all four previously-available audio commentaries (including the Philosopher, Critics, Cast & Crew, and Composer tracks). Good afternoon, Bits readers. Hope you’re all having a fine day. Obviously, this is the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day holiday here in the States, so there’s not a lot of work getting done today. But I’m having trouble concentrating today for another reason Minnesota Vikings fans will appreciate. Whew! It’s going to take me a few days to calm down after the end of that playoff game.

All right, we’ve got a pair of new Blu-ray reviews for you today from Tim Salmons: A look at Warner Archive’s Night School and The Sea Wolf, both of which are now available.

Our own Bud Elder has also checked in with a good new View from the Cheap Seats column in which he looks at some interesting deep catalog titles released on Blu-ray and/or DVD in recent weeks. [Read on here…]

All right, we’re wrapping up the week with a big title announcement and additional release news, some new disc reviews, and a few words about HDR. But first, those reviews...

Tim has just turned in his thoughts on a trio of great new Blu-ray titles, including MVD’s The Man from Earth: Special Edition, Warner Archive’s The Green Slime, and Synapse’s Suspiria: 40th Anniversary Edition Steelbook. All three packages are quite good and well worth a look, so do check them out when you have time.

Now then... let’s have that big title news: Disney and Pixar have just announced Coco for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 2/27, with the digital and Movies Anywhere release expected on 2/13. The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release will feature HDR10 and Dolby Atmos audio, while the 4K digital release will feature HDR10 or Dolby Vision with Dolby Atmos audio. We’ve got some more Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD release news for you today...

To start… 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has just officially announced Kingsman: The Golden Circle for release on all three disc formats on 12/12, confirming information we’ve posted based on retail sources. Extras on both Blu-ray versions will include the 9-part Kingsman: Inside the Golden Circle documentary (which includes Distilling the Story: Kingsman Returns, Trafficker, Tailor, Southerner, Spy, Poppy’s Special Guest: Elton John, Nefarious Lairs & High-Falutin’ Headquarters, Suited and Booted, Weapons of Choice, Brothers in Arms, Doomsday Protocol: Visual Effects, and End Game), the Black Cab Chaos: Anatomy of a Killer Chase featurette, and the Kingsman Archives gallery of concept art and still photos. Note that the 4K disc will also include Dolby Atmos audio. That same day, you’ll also be able to get the Kingsman: 2-Movie Collection on both Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD, which will package The Golden Circle with Kingman: The Secret Service. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has just officially announced the 4K Ultra HD release of Julie Taymor’s Across the Universe on 1/9/18. The disc will include HDR10, Dolby Atmos audio, and the previous Blu-ray edition with all the previous special features. You can see the cover artwork at the left there.

Also on the 4K front, it’s beginning to look like Thor: Ragnarok will be Disney and Marvel’s next 4K Ultra HD release, due day and date with its Blu-ray and DVD counterparts in early 2018. We don’t have a street date yet, but a number of international retailers – including Zavvi – are already taking pre-orders on the title. We’ve updated our 4K Ultra HD Release List accordingly. Do give them both a look. (But if you’re barf-sensitive, the latter might be a test of your constitution. FYI.)

All right, first things first today: We have a quick bit of follow-up for you this morning on those annual original Star Wars release rumors, the latest appearance of which caused a bit of a stir yesterday (and which we commented on in yesterday’s post). I know... we’re getting tired of talking about it too, but we have what seems to be rather definitive new information.

We’ve essentially confirmed that Disney’s current 4K scan of the film is the most recent revised version (essentially the latest “special edition”), not the original theatrical edition. What’s more, Disney’s director of Library Restoration and Preservation, Theo Gluck, held a special event at Ohio State University’s Wexner Center for the Arts last night, a presentation called Animation Restoration at Walt Disney Studios. Gluck was asked there about Star Wars and reported that the original cut negative for the film currently exists in its “SE” configuration only. (There’s more info, so do continue on past the jump.) All right, we’re closing out the week at CES 2017 with a couple of additional bits of 4K and industry-related news.

But first, Disney and Marvel have just officially announced the Blu-ray 3D Combo, Blu-ray Combo, Digital SD, DVD, and On-Demand release of Doctor Strange on 2/28. The Digital HD and Disney Movies Anywhere release is expected on 2/14. Extras on the Blu-ray versions will include audio commentary by director Scott Derrickson, 5 deleted scenes (Strange Meets Daniel Drumm, Kaecilius Searches for Answers, The Kamar-Taj Courtyard, Making Contact, and Lost in Kathmandu), 5 featurettes (A Strange Transformation, Strange Company, The Fabric of Reality, Across Time and Space, and The Score-cerer Supreme), a Marvel Studios Phase 3 Exclusive Look, the Team Thor: Part 2 spoof (with Thor and his roommate, Darryl), and a gag reel. The Blu-rays will feature 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. Per Disney tradition, the digital release will also include its own exclusive featurette (Through the Keyhole: The Science of the MCU). All right, in case you thought we missed posting content yesterday…

There was no Friday news post, but we did post no less than four Blu-ray reviews, including my detailed thoughts on Disney and Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens – Collector’s Edition on Blu-ray 3D format! The short of it is that the 3D presentation is pretty good, the J.J. Abrams commentary is pretty great, and the set definitely better than the original release. But I do wish that they’d create a truly comprehensive special edition look at the making of this film.  [Read on here…]
