Girl in the Spider’s Web, Criterion’s March, Bohemian Rhapsody, Little Mermaid 4K, Superman: 40th retrospective & more
We’re starting the new week with a reminder of something we posted over the weekend. On Saturday, our own Michael Coate delivered a terrific History, Legacy & Showmanship retrospective column looking back at Richard Donner’s original Superman: The Movie. Saturday was the film’s actual 40th anniversary. In honor of this, Michael offers details about that original release along with a great roundtable interview with film historians Jim Bowers, Kevin Burns, Mike Matessino, Bruce Scivally, and Larry Tye. It’s well worth your time, so don’t miss it!
Now then, the big news on Friday was that Criterion announced their March Blu-ray release slate, which is set to include Ted Wilde’s The Kid Brother starring Harold Lloyd (Cat #964 – Blu-ray and DVD) and Ingmar Bergman’s The Magic Flute (Cat #71 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 3/12, Edgar G. Ulmer’s Detour (Cat #966 – Blu-ray and DVD) and Barbara Loden’s Wanda (Cat #965 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 3/19, and Robert Zemeckis’ I Wanna Hold Your Hand (with some of his early short films too – Cat #967 – Blu-ray and DVD) and Carlos Reygadas’ Japón (Cat #968 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 3/26. We’ve updated The Criterion Spines Project page here at The Bits accordingly. [Read on here...]

First Man official, plus Halloween (2018), Perfect Blue, Arrow’s Django delay, Revenge of the Creature 3D update & more
We start today with a pair of new Blu-ray reviews, including Tim’s take on John Waters’ Female Trouble from the Criterion Collection, and also Dennis’ look at The Nun from Warner. More reviews are on the way this week and next, including (next week) several new 4K reviews from myself. Among them will be M:I – Fallout and The Lion King. My wife and I have family visiting here at the moment though, so it’s been tough to break away to do the reviews with the justice they deserve.
The BIG announcement news today is that Universal has officially set Damien Chazelle’s First Man for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 1/22, with the Digital release expected on 1/5. Here’s the great news... while the film is presented in its original 2.40:1 theatrical aspect ratio, the final scenes will be presented in full 1.78:1 to preserve the IMAX aspect as seen in theaters. Audio is English Dolby Atmos and the 4K image will include both HDR10 and Dolby Vision.
Extras on the Blu-ray versions will include feature commentary (with director Damien Chazelle, screenwriter Josh Singer, and editor Tom Cross), deleted scenes, and 8 featurettes (including Shooting for the Moon, Preparing to Launch, Giant Leap in One Small Step, Mission Gone Wrong, Putting You in the Seat, Recreating the Moon Landing, Shooting at NASA, and Astronaut Training). This is certainly the 4K Ultra HD I’m most looking forward to right now here at The Bits. It should be terrific. [Read on here...]
Venom details, Johnny English Strikes Again, a Psycho Legacy Collection update from Turbine & MUCH more
We’ve got a bunch more new Blu-ray reviews for you to check out today, including Tim’s take on Ash vs Evil Dead: The Complete Collection from Starz and Lionsgate, Single White Female from Scream Factory, and the Zombie: Limited Edition from Blue Underground, David’s look at The Bravados from Twilight Time and The Satanic Rites of Dracula from Warner Archive, and finally Dr. Adam Jahnke’s updated look at Trick ’r Treat from Scream Factory.
We’ve got a quick news update for you today, starting with word that Sony’s Venom – which as we’ve revealed streets on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 12/18 (with the digital release due on 12/11) – will include a Venom Mode pop-up trivia option, 3 deleted and extended scenes, 5 featurettes (From Symbiote to Screen, The Lethal Protector in Action, Venom Vision, Designing Venom, and Symbiote Secrets), 8 Pre-Vis sequences, the Sunflower music video (by Post Malone and Swae Lee), and a sneak peek of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Audio on the 4K version at least will include Dolby Atmos, with HDR10 high dynamic range. [Read on here...]

We’ve also got a bit of new announcement news for you...
First, Paramount has just officially announced the Blu-ray and DVD release of The Cloverfield Paradox on 2/5. This has, up until now, been a Netflix exclusive. The film will include Dolby Atmos audio and two featurettes, Things Are Not as They Appear: The Making of The Cloverfield Paradox and Shepard Team: The Cast.
20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has just set The Hate U Give for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 1/22. In announcement news today, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has officially set the CG-animated Smallfoot for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 12/11, with the Digital release expected on 12/4. Extras will feature sing-alongs, a featurette, music videos, and the Super Soozie mini-movie. Another 2001 4K delay, Hell Fest, Sopranos: Complete Series BD sale, new Kino Lorber Studio Classics titles & more
We start with more new Blu-rays here at the site today, including Dennis’ look at Brian De Palma’s Sisters (1973) now on Blu-ray from Criterion, Tim’s look at the new Army of Darkness Steelbook edition from Scream/Shout! Factory, and David’s review of The Principal from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. Enjoy!
Also today, we have an update on the availability of Warner Bros. Home Entertainment’s 2001: A Space Odyssey in 4K Ultra HD. The title had been delayed from 10/30 to 11/20. Now we’re hearing from readers that retailers are telling them to expect the title on 12/18.
The delay appears to be due to a lack of replication capacity. That’s not uncommon going into the holiday season, but it appears to be worse this year. So adjust your plans accordingly.
In announcement news today, Shout! Factory has set the Legally Blonde Collection: Shout Select Blu-ray set for release on 2/26/19. [Read on here...]
