Hateful Eight goes Blu on 3/29 (but not the Roadshow Cut), plus Michael Collins, Carol, Sisters: Unrated & more

The Weinstein Company, Starz and Anchor Bay have officially set Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight for Blu-ray and DVD release on 3/29 (SRP $39.99 and $29.98). The digital HD release is due on 3/15. Running time is 168 minutes (the Theatrical Cut only), aspect ratio is 2.76:1, and audio is 5.1 DTS HD-MA. Note that the Blu-ray includes only 2 featurettes by way of extras (Beyond the Eight: A Behind-the-Scenes Look and Sam Jackson’s Guide to Glorious 70mm). This, plus the fact that the 187-minute Roadshow Version is not included, suggests a more elaborate Blu-ray release is already planned for later this year. Because of course there is. [Read on here…]

First things first today: Our own Jim Hemphill has just posted a new Blu-ray review, this time featuring a look at Alexander Singer’s 1971 western Captain Apache, now available on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber.
In announcement news today, Universal has set Cary Grant: The Vault Collection for DVD only release on 4/19. Here’s a bit about the collection from the studio’s press site: “Featuring 18 films released between 1932 and 1936, the collection showcases the actor as he perfects his comedic timing and stretches his dramatic skills in a variety of roles alongside such Hollywood legends as Marlene Dietrich, Mae West, Sylvia Sidney, Charles Laughton, Gary Cooper, Randolph Scott and Fredric March. Including his feature film debut, This is the Night, as well as several Pre-Code dramas and comedies plus 5 films never before available to own…” We’ll post the complete list of films as soon as the studio provides it. Ultra HD BD players/discs arriving now, plus 3DTV declared “dead” by IB Times & good Star Wars/Trek news

First things first today: We’re hearing from readers that Samsung’s UBD‑K8500 UHD Blu-ray player is now starting to appear for sale on retailer shelves – including Best Buy – in at least some places around the country. Additionally, Best Buy employees are suggesting in-store that the first UHD Blu-ray titles will start to become available tomorrow (2/11), probably from Lionsgate but maybe also from Fox.
Meanwhile, I’ve now received word from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment that the studio’s first round of UHD Blu-ray titles, including The Martian, Kingsman, Exodus, and Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, will officially be available starting on Sunday 2/14 at Best Buy stores. Note, however, that it’s possible some stores will begin selling them earlier, or that some stores will not have their stock in yet by then. [Read on here…]

Fox’s X-Files: S8 replacement discs shipping, plus Twilight’s May/June slates & my SPECTRE BD review
[Editor’s Note: Be sure to follow us on Twitter @thedigitalbits @BillHuntBits and on Facebook here and here.]
Merry Monday. We hope the weekend treated you all well.
Today’s is a quick update, as I was up late last night finishing my review of MGM’s SPECTRE on Blu-ray, which streets tomorrow. So my review of SPECTRE is, in fact, the first thing I wanted to mention here today. I’m a huge Bond fan and have really liked the Daniel Craig era thus far, but with SPECTRE I feel as if EON may have jumped the shark. What would the Bond equivalent be? Jumped the Thames, I suppose. Anyway, do check out the review, see what I mean, and let me know what you think on Facebook and Twitter (via the links above). [Read on here…]
