All right, we’ve got more great stuff for you here at The Bits today…

First, our own Michael Coate has turned in a new History, Legacy & Showmanship column looking back at The Blue Max, including the film’s original roadshow release and also composer Jerry Goldsmith’s work on the score. This is, of course, in honor of the new Twilight Time Blu-ray release of the film today, as well as La-La Land Records’ excellent new 2-disc soundtrack CD release! Michael even includes an interview with our old friend (and film music historian) Jeff Bond, who wrote a track-by-track analysis of the score for the CD. The good Dr. Jahnke has given Thomas Vinterberg’s The Hunt a look. The film stars Mads Mikkelsen and is available now from Magnolia. Meanwhile, Tim has given Taika Waititi’s Boy a spin. The indie release hails from New Zealand and is available now on BD from Kino Lorber.

Also today, our own Mario Boucher has turned in a new Inside Cinema column today, in which he goes behind the scenes at Digital Domain on the making of Gavin Hood’s Ender’s Game, which is newly-available on Blu-ray from Lionsgate. Tim has checked in this afternoon with a brand new Blu-ray review: Jean-Pierre Melville’s Two Men in Manhattan, now available from the Cohen Film Collection. More reviews are on the way, so be sure to check back over the next few days.

In announcement news today, MGM has announced that it’s celebrating its 90th anniversary with new 4K restorations of some of its best films, including Rocky, Rain Man, Fargo, RoboCop and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly and is releasing them on Blu-ray. RoboCop is already available and most of the others are already available for pre-order on Amazon.com. Meanwhile, they’re releasing other titles on Blu-ray like In the Heat of the Night, A Chrous Line, The Birdcage and others. [Read on here…]

Today being a work holiday here in the States, things are a bit slow news-wise, but we do have some good stuff for you nevertheless…

First, our own Tim Salmons has posted a review of Disney’s new Mary Poppins: 50th Anniversary Edition on Blu-ray Disc. Sounds like it’s loaded with content and the quality is excellent. Do check it out.

Well, folks... today is the Friday before Christmas, so you know what that means.  Hollywood is shutting down for the holidays and lots of you are starting your Christmas vacations!

Things are going to be pretty slow over the next week or two, so we may not check in every day, but we’ll try to drop by if there anything worth reporting for you guys.  You never know.  And we’ll have some reviews for you too.

Speaking of which, we’ve just added no less than 12 Blu-ray Disc reviews into the new site’s database, including a pair of music titles in Sting: Bring on the Night and The Police: Certifiable, a couple of fine catalog titles in the form of Forrest Gump, Rocky Balboa and Outbreak, a mess of Dr. Jahnke’s horror reviews including Audition, Children of the Corn, Child’s Play, Book of Blood and The Blood Trilogy, and finally a pair of great holiday titles including White Christmas and – or course – It’s a Wonderful Life.  What would the Christmas season be without those last two?  [Read on here...]

First, our own Tim Salmons has returned with a review of Sony’s Olympus Has Fallen on Blu-ray Disc.  Sounds like a decent rental at least.

Also today, MPI and IFC Midnight have set Argento’s Dracula 3-D, directed by Dario Argento and starring Rutger Hauer, for Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray release on 1/28.

Scream Factory has set The Slumber Party Massacre for Blu-ray release on 3/18.  [Read on here…]
