Sweet Charity retrospective, Thor: Dark World BD/DVD Combo nixed, Shirley Temple Black RIP & more
First things first today: Our own Michael Coate has turned in a new History, Legacy & Showmanship column in which he looks back at the original roadshow release of Sweet Charity, which celebrates its 45th anniversary today. The piece includes a great and lengthy roundtable interview with a trio of leading experts on the film’s history, so don’t miss it. Enjoy!
In other news today, Disney has revealed that Thor: The Dark World (which streets on 2/25) is not going to be available in BD/DVD Combo versions as originally announced, but rather a Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray Combo, and single-disc Blu-ray and DVD editions, all with digital copy. This appears to be part of a broader shift by the studio away from BD/DVD Combos. Members of the Disney Movie Club who had pre-ordered the announced BD3D/BD/DVD Combo have had their orders shifted to the BD3D/BD version. And as you can see from the art below, the versions available for pre-order on Amazon have changed too. [Read on here...]

47 Ronin official, plus Warner WWII sets, catalog/indie news & Universal April catalog BD cover art
We’re closing out the week with a trio of new Blu-ray reviews from Tim Salmons, who’s offered up his thoughts on Synapse’s Maniac Cop, and Blue Underground’s Maniac Cop 2: Collector’s Edition and Maniac Cop 3: Badge of Silence – Collector’s Edition. Meanwhile, I’m working on some new BD reviews for next week, and don’t forget that we posted Jeff’s look at the Region B/German release of the classic Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series box set last night. In which we look at the classic Battlestar Galactica TV series on German/Region B Blu-ray…
All right, there’s not a lot of news to report this afternoon and we’ve been working new Blu-ray reviews all day. So today’s post is limited to this…
Longtime classic Battlestar Galactica fan and expert Jeff Kleist has turned in his in-depth review of Koch Media GmbH’s Region B/Amazon Germany-exclusive Blu-ray release of Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series, which also includes the complete spin-off series Galactica 1980. Even given the hoops you have to jump through, as a Region A consumer, to obtain an all region (and PAL compatible) BD player and a PAL compatible display, if you’re a fan of this franchise the German set is your only HD option… and it also happens to be pretty terrific. Click here to read all the details in Jeff’s review.
We have more news and BD reviews to come tomorrow, so stay tuned!

Kill Your Darlings, plus more classic Godzilla films coming to Blu-ray!
All right, I apologize in advance for the fact that today’s post is so short, but I’m suffering through a bout of vertigo caused by having slept in a lousy position for too many hours last night and thereby strained my neck. Ugh. Seriously, right? Ain’t nobody got time for that!
Anyway, our very own Dr. Adam Jahnke has turned in a new installment of his Electric Theater column today featuring his weekly An Honor to Be Nominated look back at deserving films that were Oscar-nominated but didn’t win. Today’s subject: Herbert Ross’ The Turning Point (1977). Enjoy! [Read on here…]

MOS DEF: The Very Best Discs of 2013
The Digital Bits’ Mark A. Altman weighs in on the Top 25 best Blu-ray and DVD releases of the last year… because 10 just wasn’t enough
As a longtime discophile (and, I’m not talking about Donna Summer), nothing upsets me more to hear about the so-called end of days for physical media. Cries that the streaming Visigoths are at the gates ready to crush our silver platters into dust in the process make me shudder. [Read on here…]
