Obviously, if you’ve read my update here on The Bits (from early last week, on Tuesday), you’ll know that our own sources have been indicating for a while now that both The Abyss and the original Avatar would be coming to 4K Ultra HD concurrently with Avatar: The Way of Water. Our original information was that this would either happen with the film’s theatrical release, or with its home release. The decision has clearly now been made to go with the home release, and now the only question that remains is when that home release will actually happen.
The timing of the sequel’s release on streaming, Digital download, and physical disc has yet to be officially announced and probably isn’t locked in stone. It’s quite possible that it will depend on just how well the film does at the box office. But if Disney follows the usual industry pattern for such releases, it’s likely to come in early 2023. (Late Q1 or early Q2 would be my guess.) And now Cameron himself has suggested the March timeframe.
Rest assured, we will certainly offer more information about all this as soon as it comes in, but it definitely appears as if Cameron has now essentially confirmed the information we’ve been hearing from our sources. So the good news is that it seems that The Abyss is finally coming to 4K Ultra HD and likely Blu-ray Disc as well early next year.
That’s all for now. Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
Stay tuned...
