Criterion’s April slate, plus Little Mermaid 4K, tons of newly-announced Shout, Scream, and Kino titles & more

We’ve got a big release news update for you today, but first we have a couple new Blu-ray reviews for you...

First, Tim has taken a look at Scream Factory’s Steelbook re-issue of The Thing: Collector’s Edition. He’s also reviewed Scream’s new Urban Legend: Collector’s Edition. And we also have a Blu-ray review from Dennis of What Ever Happened to Aunt Alice? from Kino Lorber Studio Classics. Enjoy!

Note that we’ve also posted this week’s update of the Release Dates and Artwork section featuring all the latest Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD cover artwork and Amazon.com pre-order links. And we’ll be updating the 4K Ultra HD Release List here at The Bits in the next day or so as well.

Starting on April 9, look for updated versions of Jim Jarmusch’s Night on Earth (Cat# 401 – Blu-ray and DVD) and Stranger Than Paradise (Cat# 400 – Blu-ray and DVD). On 4/19, you’ll get Jan Němec’s Diamonds of the Night (Cat# 969 – Blu-ray and DVD). This will be followed by Elia Kazan’s A Face in the Crowd (Cat# 970 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 4/23. And finally, look for Gillian Armstrong’s My Brilliant Career (Cat# 973 – Blu-ray and DVD) and a collector’s set of Jackie Chan’s Police Story (Cat# 971 – Blu-ray and DVD) and Police Story 2 (Cat# 972 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 4/30. We’ve updated our Criterion Spines Project list here at The Bits accordingly.

Also today, Walt Disney Home Entertainment has set The Little Mermaid: Anniversary Edition for release on Blu-ray/DVD Combo and 4K Ultra HD Combo on 2/26. The 4K will include Dolby Atmos audio. Extras will include a new Sing-Along Mode, Alan Menken & the Leading Ladies Song, What I Want from You… Is Your Voice, Stories from Walt’s Office: Gadgets & Gizmos, #TreasuresUntold, and more. It appears that legacy extras will be included on the Digital version only.

In other news, Universal Studios Home Entertainment will release Beau Willimon’s Mary Queen of Scots (2018) on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 2/26.

Amazon is now taking pre-orders on Warner’s future release of Aquaman and Creed II on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K (and 3D in the case of Aquaman), along with Paramount’s Bumblebee, Sony’s Spider-man: Into the Spider Verse, and Universal’s Welcome to Marwen and Mortal Engines on all three formats. 20th Century Fox’s Vice and The Favorite are also coming to Blu-ray and DVD only, as is Warner’s The Mule. Street dates for all are TBA. [Editor’s Note: Amazon IS taking pre-orders for The Mule in 4K. Just FYI.]

Image Entertainment and RLJE are apparently releasing Robert D. Krzykowski’s The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then the Bigfoot on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K on 4/2. The film stars Sam Elliot.

FUNimation is releasing the anime series Star Blazers 2202: Space Battleship Yamato – Part One on Blu-ray on 3/26.

Shout and Scream are working on a nice list of Blu-ray and DVD titles for April, including Rust Creek and Pledge (on 4/2), This Gun for Hire: Shout Select, Talk to Me: Shout Select, and The Legend of the Seven Golden Vampires (on 4/9), Superstition, The Manitou, Grave of the Vampire, and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Season One – Steelbook (on 4/16), Paradise Alley: Shout Select, The High Chaparral: Season Three (DVD), The Green Inferno, and The Boris Karloff/Bela Lugosi Collection (includes The Black Cat (1934), The Raven, The Invisible Ray, and Black Friday) (on 4/23), and Tarantula!, Never-Ending Man: Hayao Miyazaki (documentary), Kuffs: Shout Select, The Brain, and The Boxer: Shout Select (on 4/30).

Arrow Video will release Blood Hunger: The Films of José Larraz on Blu-ray on 3/26. The set will include Whirlpool (1970), Vampyres (1974), and The Coming of Sin (La Visita del Vicio – 1978). Arrow is also releasing the Sister Street Fighter Collection on Blu-ray on 3/5, which is due to include Sister Street Fighter (1974), Sister Street Fighter: Hanging by a Thread (1975), Return of the Sister Street Fighter (1975), and Sister Street Fighter: Fifth Level Fist (1976).

Code Red will release Kingdom of the Spiders (1977) on Blu-ray on 3/26.

And the MVD Rewind Collection will release the Nemesis Sequel Trilogy on Blu-ray on 3/26 (including films 2, 3, and 4).
