The studio’s Korean distributor has begun teasing titles on their social media, and you should know I’ve been able to confirm them all independently with our own sources.
Here are the titles in question…
- William Wyler’s Ben-Hur (1959) – already listed for pre-order, TBA Q1
- Alan J. Pakula’s All the President’s Men (1976) – already listed for pre-order, TBA Q1
- Chuck Russell’s Eraser (1996)
- Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity (2013)
- Tim Burton’s Mars Attacks! (1996)
- Neil Jordan’s Interview with the Vampire (1994)
- Victor Fleming’s Gone with the Wind (1939)
- P. T. Anderson’s Magnolia (1999)
Now, the first two titles we already knew about, as they’re already up for pre-order on Amazon and other retail sites.
Gravity is a title WBDHE has been working on for 4K release for a few years now (we’ve mentioned it here on The Bits before), and the delay has reportedly been getting director Alfonso Cuarón to approve the HDR master—presumably that’s finally happened.
Mars Attacks!, Gone with the Wind, and Magnolia I’ve known about for a couple of months now from my sources, so it's good to see additional confirmation on those.
The other two titles, it’s very nice to see added to the slate!
It should be noted that this isn’t likely to be the complete slate—there should be several more 4K catalog titles planned, and there’s likely to be 2-3 more from the Warner Archive Collection as well.
Also, keep in mind that this is in addition to the titles that Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment has already licensed to Arrow Video, the Criterion Collection, and Shout! Factory for release in the next 12-24 months.
So you can reasonably expect more titles to be added to this list in the coming months.
Nor do I expect that any deal with Netflix is going to prevent these titles from reaching 4K disc. Even if the deal closes sooner rather than later, it’s not likely to impact anything for the next 12-18 months. So rest easy on that score.
BTW, speaking of Arrow Video, that’s our other piece of release news today: The label has just officially announced their March Blu-ray and 4K UHD slate!
Look for it to include Fabrice Du Welz’s Calvaire (1969) on Blu-ray (UK only) on 3/2, John Frankenheimer’s Black Sunday (1977) on Blu-ray (UK only) on 3/9, Mel Brooks’ Spaceballs (1987) in 4K Ultra HD (UK only) on 3/16, Eugenio Mira’s The Birthday (2004) on Blu-ray and 4K UHD (for the UK, US, and Canada) on 3/16-17, Richard Fleischer’s Red Sonja (1985) in 4K Ultra HD (for the US and Canada) on 3/24, Eiichi Kudo’s Samurai Revolution Trilogy (1963-67) on Blu-ray (for the UK, US, and Canada) and Tope Hooper’s Salem’s Lot (1979) in 4K Ultra HD (for the UK, US, and Canada) on 3/30-31, and John Woo’s Hard Boiled (1992) in Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD (for the UK only) on 3/30.
You can pre-order the US titles here, and the UK titles here, and here’s a look at the cover artwork for these…
That’s all for now! Stay tuned…
