BlacKkKlansman, Yellowstone: S1, The Crown: S2, My Neighbor Totoro: 30th, Disney 4K, Amy Winehouse & MUCH more

We’ve got a bunch of news for you today, including Blu-ray and 4K items of interest. But we’re going to start with some new disc reviews we’ve done over the last couple of days for you...

First up, I’ve posted my in-depth looks at John Carpenter’s original Halloween in 4K from Lionsgate, as well as The Sum of All Fears and Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit in 4K, which completes our look at the full Jack Ryan 5-Film Collection 4K box set from Paramount. Halloween features a fantastic new 4K film scan approved by both Carpenter and cinematographer Dean Cundy, but the audio options are the same as the 35th Anniversary Blu-ray (which means the mono is not original theatrical).

I’m also currently working on a review of Fox’s The X-Men Trilogy in 4K, as well as the Universal Classic Monsters Complete 30-Film Collection, The Invisible Man: Complete Legacy Collection, and Creature from the Black Lagoon: Complete Legacy Collection all on Blu-ray. And yes, I am attempting to ascertain when fixed discs will be available for sale (the sets are not currently available directly from Amazon) and how you’ll be able to tell that you have the fixed discs via the packaging. Now then, let’s have some announcement news...

Universal and Focus Films have officially set Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 11/6, with the Digital release expected on 10/23. The Blu-ray versions will include two extras, including the A Spike Lee Joint interview featurette and a BlacKkKlansman Extended Trailer featuring Prince’s Mary Don’t You Weep. Note that the film was finished as a native 4K Digital Intermediate and the UHD will include both Dolby Atmos audio (according to the back of the packaging art on Amazon) and Dolby Vision HDR. You can see the cover artwork above left and also below.

While we’re talking 4K, we’re beginning to get word from international retail sources that Universal and DreamWorks’ How to Train Your Dragon and How to Train Your Dragon 2 are coming to 4K, possibly as soon as December. We’re also starting to see international retail indications that Disney’s animated Wreck-It Ralph, The Lion King, and The Little Mermaid are all coming to 4K Ultra HD, again possibly as soon as December. We’ll post more when we hear it.

Paramount Pictures Home Entertainment will release Yellowstone: The Complete First Season on Blu-ray and DVD on 12/4. The series stars Kevin Costner.

Flicker Alley has just released a trio of new Blu-ray MOD offerings, including the Rudolph Valentino Collection: Volumes 1 and 2 and Berlin, Symphony of a Great City (1927). SRP is $24.95 each. Valentino: Volume 1 will include Eyes of Youth (1920) and Moran of the Lady Letty (1922). Volume 2 will include A Society Sensation (1918), Virtuous Sinners (1919), Stolen Moments (1920), and The Young Rajah (1922). All three are available now.

Lionsgate has set A Prayer Before Dying for Blu-ray and DVD release on 10/9. They also have Her Stolen Past coming to DVD that same day. On 10/16, look for Harry & Meghan: A Royal Romance on DVD, Black Sails: The Complete Collection on Blu-ray and DVD, and the documentary Generation Wealth on DVD.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has set The Crown: The Complete Second Season for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 11/7. The studio has also set The Marine 6: Close Quarters for Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital release on 11/13.

Kino Classics is releasing Joaquim Pedro de Andrade: The Complete Films on Blu-ray on 9/25. The 3-disc set will include the feature films Garrincha: Joy of the People (1963), The Priest and the Girl (1965), Macunaima (1969), The Conspirators (1972), Conjugal Warfare (1975), and The Brazilwood Man (1981), and the short films The Poet of Castelo (1959), The Master of Apipucos (1959), Cat Skin (1960), Cinema Novo (1967), Brasilia: Contradictions of a New City (1967), The Language of Persuasion (1970), Tropical Lane (1977), and O Aleijadinho (1978).

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has set The Chi: Season One for release on DVD on 9/25 (and Digital on 9/24).

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment is also releasing new MOD DVD TV titles on 9/25, including Bob’s Burgers: Seasons 2, 6, 7, and 8, along with Ghosted: Season 1 and Better Things: Season 2. Now available on MOD DVD are LA to Vegas: Season 1, APB: The Complete Series, Shots Fired: The Complete Series, You’re the Worst Season: Season 4, Man Seeking Woman: Season 3, It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia: Season 12, and Empire: Season 4.

GKids has announced a new My Neighbor Totoro: 30th Anniversary Limited Edition box set release, which will include the recent GKids Blu-ray, plus the film’s soundtrack on CD (available for the first time in the US), and a 40-page book with artwork and essays. Look for that on 12/11 (SRP $49.97).

MVD Entertainment and Full Moon are releasing Prehysteria (1993) on Blu-ray on 10/9.

Coen Media is releasing Luis Puenzo’s The Official Story (1985) on Blu-ray and DVD on 10/9.

Eagle Vision is releasing the Amy Winehouse: Back to Black documentary on Blu-ray and DVD on 11/2. The release will also include the recently unearthed Lost private live performance from February 2008 as a bonus feature.

BBC Home Entertainment will release Doctor Who: Peter Davison – Complete Season One on Blu-ray on 12/4. They also have The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy: Special Edition coming to Blu-ray on 11/13. This is the 1981 BBC TV series adaptation of the Douglas Adams radio series.

And for UK readers, Eureka has set Rüdiger Suchsland’s documentary Hitler’s Hollywood (2014) for release on Blu-ray/DVD Combo on 5 November.
