Anchor Bay and Starz have finally officially announced the Blu-ray and DVD release of Bong Joon Ho’s  science fiction/actioner Snowpiercer on 10/21 (SRP $29.99 and $24.98). The film stars Chris Evans, Song Kang Ho, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell, Octavia Spencer, Ewen Bremner, John Hurt, and Ed Harris. We’ve seen it here at The Bits; it’s pretty terrific. Both versions will include the director’s proper 126-minute cut, a critics commentary, and a bonus disc that adds 5 featurettes (The Birth of Snowpiercer, The Characters, Chris Evans & Tilda Swinton on Snowpiercer, The Train Brought to Life: Behind the Scenes of a Special Screening, and Transperceneige: From the Blank Page to the Black Screen), an animated prologue, and concept art galleries. [Read on here…]

PBS has officially set Masterpiece Classic: Downton Abbey – Season Five for release on Blu-ray on 1/27/15.

Amazon.com is now taking pre-orders on A Most Wanted Man from Lionsgate, Richard Linklater’s Boyhood from Paramount, and Anchor Bay’s Begin Again (from the director of Once).

Speaking of Paramount, the studio has announced that they’ve made a deal for the home video rights to Constantin Film’s Love, Rosie, directed by Christian Ditter. They expect to release it on disc formats and digital in early 2015.

The Warner Archive has announced the MOD DVD release of TV’s Spencer for Hire: The Complete First Season and The Bowery Boys Collection: Volume Four. Both are now available. Dr. Jahnke has more in his recent Burnt Offerings column here.

Here’s something cool: Kino Lorber has announced a nice slate of deep catalog titles for release on Blu-ray in November, including Anthony Mann’s Man of the West and Louis Malle’s Via Maria on 11/4, Burt Reynolds’ Gator, Joseph Sargent’s White Lightning, Robert Sparr’s More Dead Than Alive, Steve Carter’s Drum, and Arnold Laven’s Sam Whiskey on 11/11, Frank Capra’s Pocketful of Miracles and Hal Ashby’s Coming Home on 11/18, and finally Robert Altman’s The Long Goodbye and Thieves Like Us on 11/25. Not too shabby.

Meanwhile, The Cinema Guild has set Thom Andersen’s documentary Los Angeles Plays Itself for Blu-ray and DVD release on 10/14 (SRP $34.95 and $29.95).

Strand Releasing has set The Way He Looks for release on 1/27/15.

And finally, 20th Century Fox is getting ready to release their Fox Searchlight Pictures: 20th Anniversary Collection Blu-ray box set (SRP $299.99 but Amazon has it for $269.99). Street date is still TBA, but the set will include 127 Hours, 28 Days Later, (500) Days of Summer, Beasts of the Southern Wild, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Black Swan, Boys Don’t Cry, The Brothers McMullen, Crazy Heart, The Descendants, The Full Monty, Garden State, Juno, The Last King of Scotland, Little Miss Sunshine, Napoleon Dynamite, Once, Sideways, Slumdog Millionaire, and 12 Years a Slave, along with an exclusive Bonus Disc containing the 98-minute We Have Your Story documentary on the history of Fox Searchlight.

We’ll leave you with a look at the Blu-ray Disc cover artwork for a bunch of the titles we just mentioned above…
