We start as always today with more new disc reviews, including…

Stephen’s look at Jonathan Demme’s Last Embrace (1979) in 4K Ultra HD from Vinegar Syndrome’s excellent Cinématographe line, as well as John Waters’ Cry-Baby (1990) in 4K Ultra HD from Kino Lorber Studio Classics.

Stuart’s reviews of Andrzej Żuławski’s L’important c’est d’Aimer... (1975) on Blu-ray from Film Movement via Vinegar Syndrome, along with John Guillermin’s The Whole Truth (1958) on Blu-ray from Powerhouse Films’ Indicator label.

And Dennis’ take on Boaz Yakin’s Fresh (1994) on Blu-ray from Via Vision’s Imprint Films.

Now then, there’s some exciting release news for us to share with you today, but first we want to take a moment to clear up some confusion: The Warner Archive Collection is still the Warner Archive Collection!

Many of you have probably seen that their Facebook page was suddenly rebranded as Warner Classics (click here for the link). But rest assured, the Warner Archive Collection remains! Warner is simply trying to unite all of its “classic film” marketing activity in one social media space. So while the Warner Archive Collection remains the core of this page, you’ll also learn here about forthcoming classic film releases on Blu-ray and 4K UHD from the studio proper, as well as theatrical screening activity, and the like. So everyone can relax—Warner Archive has not disappeared!

In fact, Warner Archive has just shared some excellent release news: The Looney Tunes Collector’s Choice: Volume 4 Blu-ray is officially coming on 11/26! You can see their official Facebook post here. Details of the actual shorts the set will include are yet to be announced, but the release is definitely now in production. Great news indeed! A24 has begun taking pre-orders on their shop-exclusive Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD release of Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest (2023). Per their website, “extras include postcards with stills photography by Agata Gryzbowska and Kuba Kaminski, a short documentary on Aleksandra Bystroń-Kołodziejczyk, a recording of Sunbeams (written and performed by Joseph Wulf), and 32-minute making-of documentary Filming Zone, directed, edited & photographed by Filip Skrońc. Filming Zone can be watched with or without commentary by Production Designer Chris Oddy, Costume Designer Malgorzata Karpiuk, Director of Photography Łukasz Żal, and Editor Paul Watts.”

Click here or on the cover artwork below to pre-order it from A24’s shop. Street date is TBA... [Editor’s Update: Both the Blu-ray and 4K UHD SKUs are now shipping.]

Dark Arts Entertainment and MVD have announced the Blu-ray and DVD release of Jake Macpherson’s Terror Firma (2023) on 8/27.

Our friends at Celluloid Dreams have revealed that they’re working on a 4K and Blu-ray restoration of Paolo Cavara’s Black Belly of the Tarantula (1971) from the original camera negative. The films star Giancarlo Giannini, Barbara Bouchet, and Barbara Bach, and features music by the great Ennio Morricone.

Finally, Blue Underground has set Enzo G. Castellari’s High Crime for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 8/27. The 4K and Blu-ray will include 3 audio commentaries, 6 featurettes, an alternate ending, the theatrical trailer, and poster and still galleries.

And in other news today, this is well worth your time: Kino Lorber’s new episode of Shelf Space on YouTube features an hour-long conversation between Frank Tarzi—head of acquisitions for Kino Lorber Studio Classics and previously the man behind Olive Films—along with our old friend Eric D. Wilkinson of the MVD Rewind Collection. It’s a great chat and the pair teases a number forthcoming releases, including the ABC anthology series Darkroom on Blu-ray and Robert Greenwald’s Xanadu! (1980) on Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD from KLSC, as well as When the Bullet Hits the Bone (1996) and Cheerleaders Wild Weekend (1979) on Blu-ray along with a couple of yet-to-be-named 4K titles (one of which may be a Van Damme film) from MVD. You can watch the episode here...

Back with more soon! Stay tuned...
