We’re closing out the week with a new review from the esteemed Jim Hemphill, this time looking at a 1975 exploitation classic from William Girdler. That’s right, it’s Sheba, Baby, starring the legendary Pam Grier. And if you’re a fan of the film, you certainly won’t want to miss out on the fantastic new Blu-ray release from Arrow Video. Check out all the details here.

In announcement news today, Lionsgate has set Standoff for Blu-ray, DVD, and digital release on 4/12. The film stars Laurence Fishburne and Thomas Jane.  [Read on here…]

Shout! Factory has set the classic western TV series Death Valley Days: The Complete First Season for DVD only release on 3/29.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is releasing Open Season: Scared Silly on Blu-ray and DVD on 3/8.

Entertainment One will release Jon Cassar’s western Forsaken on Blu-ray and DVD on 3/29. The film stars Kiefer Sutherland, Donald Sutherland, and Demi Moore.

Cleopatra has set The Damned: Don’t You Wish That We Were Dead for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 5/20.

The Film Detective is releasing Delmer Daves’s The Red House: Restored Version (1947) on BD-R “on demand” on 3/29.

Vinegar Syndrome has Frightmare due on Blu-ray on 3/29.

Coming later in 2016 from Kino Lorber are the catalog titles Certain Fury (1985), The Astro-Zombies (1968), Stryker (1983), and Something for Everyone (1970).

And Alchemy has set the horror title The Fear of Darkness for release on DVD only on 3/1.

Finally today, I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the passing of author Harper Lee, who died this morning in Alabama at the age of 89. Lee, of course, was the writer of the 1960 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel To Kill a Mockingbird, which was later made into the terrific Universal feature film of the same name starring Gregory Peck. Mockingbird is one of those books that it seems every American child is made to read in grade school, and it’s one of the few that really stuck with me over the years. It was certainly my first favorite American novel. Forget all of this silly recent business with the its-not-really-a-sequel Go Set a Watchman. Atticus Finch has always reminded me a lot of my own grandfather. Both men – one real, one fictional – possessed a kind of quiet, principled wisdom that guides me still. You can read more on Lee’s passing here at The New York Times.

We’ll leave you with a look at a little more new Blu-ray cover artwork, with clickable Amazon.com pre-order links if available...

Have a great weekend. Stay tuned...
