Pick-Ups for the week of May 18, 2015

Welcome back to my Dailies feature, Pick-Ups!

It’s designed to feature older Blu-ray releases that we haven’t gotten around to reviewing until now (sorry about that!), as well as select international releases and other unique titles on disc.

I try to do this column on a weekly basis, so be sure to check back regularly for more titles that are worthy of your attention. [Read on here...]

We’re starting things off today with another installment of Tim Salmons’ new Dailies feature, Pick-Ups. This week, Tim reviews an older Criterion title on Blu-ray, Orson Welles’ F for Fake, as well as a pair of UK/Region B Blu-ray titles from Arrow, including Time Bandits and The Stuff. Do check them out.

Also here at The Bits today, our own Russell Hammond has posted the weekly update of the Release Dates & Artwork section, featuring all the latest Blu-ray and DVD cover artwork and Amazon.com pre-order links. As always, a portion of anything you order from Amazon through our links goes to help support our work here and we truly do appreciate it.  [Read on here…]

All right, as we posted earlier, we’re kicking things off today with Tim Salmons’ review of Scream’s new Mad Max: Collector’s Edition. The disc streets on 5/5 and is well worth a look.

In announcement news today, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has set CHAPPiE for Blu-ray and DVD release on 6/16, with the digital version due on 5/26. Both disc versions will feature the We Are Tetravaal featurette. To this, the Blu-ray will add 8 more featurettes (Chappie: The Streetwise Professor, Arms Race: The Weapons and Robots, Bringing Chappie to Life: The Visual Effects, From Tetra Vaal to Chappie, Keep It Gangster, The Reality of Robotics, Jozi: Real City and a Sci-Fi Setting, and Rogue Robot: Deconstructing the Stunts & Special Effects), along with an extended scenes (A Very Bad Man) and The Art of Chappie photo gallery. We’ve just posted an in-depth review of Scream Factory’s new Mad Max: Collector’s Edition, set to be released on Blu-ray on 5/5. Our own Tim Salmons’ has given the new edition a good going over for you all. The A/V quality is marginally different than the previous MGM Blu-ray (not really better or worse overall – just different), but the new extras are pretty terrific. It’s well worth a look, especially if you haven’t purchased the film on Blu-ray before. Those of you with the existing MGM BD release might have a tougher decision to make, but at $14 it’s not like buying the new edition and keeping both is going to break the bank. Anyway, enjoy the review!

Stay tuned...

We’re got three more new reviews for you today from Tim Salmons: A look at Kino Lorber’s White Lightning (1973) and its sequel Gator (1976) on Blu-ray, as well as thoughts on Shout! Factory’s new Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume XXXII DVD box set. Do check them out.

A quick review note: I’m currently working my way though Fox’s new Exodus: Gods and Kings – Deluxe Edition on Blu-ray and should have the review ready to post by Monday. I’ve got a few other reviews in the hopper too, so be sure to check back.  [Read on here…]
