We’re starting things today with a new Pick-Ups column from our own Tim Salmons, featuring a review of Scream Factory’s The Car on Blu-ray Disc. Tim will be posting new “catch-up” Scream and Shout BD reviews (and more) all week, so do check them out.

First up today, people who have pre-ordered Samsung’s first 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player (the UBDK8500) on Amazon and Best Buy are reporting that they’re getting notices that the player will ship on 2/12 or 2/21, as opposed to 3/1. So it’s possible that discs may ship earlier as well. We’ll let you know as we hear updates. [Read on here…]

They say only bad news is dumped on Friday, but every now and again there’s a bit of good Friday news too. In this case, our friends at the Criterion Collection have just announced their April Blu-ray slate and it includes some great new titles and catalog upgrades too. Look for Howard Hawks’ Only Angels Have Wings (Cat #806 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 4/12, A Whit Stillman Trilogy: Metropolitan, Barcelona, The Last Days of Disco (Cat #326, 485 & 807 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 4/19, and The Kennedy Films of Robert Drew & Associates (Cat #808 – Blu-ray and DVD – includes Primary, Adventures on the New Frontier, Crisis, and Faces of November), David Lean’s Brief Encounter (Cat #76 – Blu-ray, DVD & iTunes), and Christian Petzold’s Phoenix (Cat #809 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 4/26. We’ve updated The Criterion Spines Project listing here at The Bits accordingly.  [Read on here…]

Pick-Ups for the Week of January 11, 2016

Welcome back to a new edition of Pick-Ups!

Ok, I’m back finally after a holiday break. I hope you enjoyed yourself as safely as possible and got lots of goodies to sort through (I know I did).

I also hope you managed to go out and see a few movies. How about that Force Awakens, huh? Oh, and The Hateful Eight in 70mm? Wow, what a great year for going to the cinema.  [Read on here…]

While I’m gathering my final thoughts on my experience of Ultra HD Blu-ray at CES 2016 last week (to wrap up our coverage of the convention), I wanted to jump in quickly today to take care of a couple important pieces of business here at The Bits.

First, our own Tim Salmons has turned in his thoughts on Arrow Video’s new Blood Rage: Special Edition Blu-ray.

I’ve also just posted my in-depth review of Ridley Scott’s The Martian, which streets tomorrow on Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray, and DVD. The film just took home the Golden Globe for Best Comedy or Musical Film of all things. Don’t miss it.  [Read on here…]

All right, I’m wrapping up our coverage of Press Day at CES 2016 with a quick report of key UHD-related highlights from the big afternoon press events in the day, which featured tech industry giants Samsung and Sony.  [Read on here…]

Pick-Ups for the Week of December 14, 2015

Welcome back to a new edition of Pick-Ups!

Ok, this will be another brief week. I have three new reviews for you, including a couple of family-friendly titles to watch over the holidays. I’ll be back after the holidays, of course, with some new titles for you to check out. Until then, enjoy this week’s reviews and Happy Holidays from myself and everyone else here at The Bits[Read on here…]

Today’s update is later than usual (and it’s also Wednesday’s update too), but you’ll see why in a moment...

We’ve just spent the whole day working on a brand new History, Legacy & Showmanship column from our own Michael Coate, featuring a look back at the original 1977 theatrical release of Star Wars, in anticipation of this week’s long-anticipated release of The Force Awakens. Michael has produced an exhaustively-researched chronicle of the film’s debut theatrical run, featuring trivia, period review quotes, and a listing of all the original theatrical engagements around North America. He even rounds the column out with a great roundtable interview featuring historian and author Marcus Hearn (The Cinema of George Lucas), filmmaker Patrick Read Johnson (5-25-77), filmmaker and special edition producer Charles de Lauzirika (Crave, and most recently documentary content for Disney’s Star Wars Launch Bay exhibit), and filmmaker Kevin Rubio (Troops). It’s a great read, so do give it a look and enjoy!  [Read on here…]

I am very hard at work on my review of The X-Files: The Complete Series on Blu-ray, so today’s update will be brief.

But our own Tim Salmons has turned in his Pick-Ups thoughts on Lionsgate’s outstanding Hannibal: Season Three on Blu-ray, complete with a superb batch of special features produced by our own friend Cliff Stephenson. Don’t miss it!  [Read on here…]

Let’s close out the week here at The Bits with a couple of additional Blu-ray reviews, shall we?

I’ve offered my own thoughts on Warner’s recent The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Blu-ray, and Tim has posted a look at Anchor Bay’s Goodnight Mommy.

We’ll be back with more reviews next week, including my in-depth take of Fox’s new The X-Files: The Complete Series Blu-ray box set, which the little green men of UPS have just dropped off on my doorstep. So be sure to watch for that.  [Read on here…]

Pick-Ups for the Week of December 7, 2015

Welcome back to a new edition of Pick-Ups!

Sorry for the lack of reviews from myself lately. After the massive review coverage I did for Halloween, I decided to take a little break and tend to some personal business at home (as well as stuff myself on Thanksgiving goodies). Now I’m back and I thought I’d cover some titles that we haven’t covered here at The Bits just yet, including some that are hot off the presses.  [Read on here...]
